Planting Big Bertha Bell Peppers

This is a presentation of how to plant a Big Bertha Bell Pepper plant. Happy Gardening!

Supplies

-Big Bertha pepper plant (May be purchased at your local garden store)

-shovel

-safety gloves (if desired)

-potting soil

-water

-adequate space in yard or garden

Find Good Location for Pepper Plant

The pepper plant requires 6 or more hours of sunlight each day, so place the plant in an area where it can receive a lot of sunlight. if growing multiple plants, plant each pepper plant with at least three feet of space in between each plan. The soil around the plant needs to be fertile and watered daily.

Locate Your True Pepper Plant Leaves

The first true leaves are located at the base of the plant near the bottom. (They will be the biggest leaves at the bottom of the plant) everything under your true leaves will be covered in soil.

Dig a Hole

Use a small shovel and dig a hole relative to the size of the plant’s pot. Note: don't dig hole too deep you don't want to cover up your first true leaves.

Grab Your Pepper Plant by the Base of the Stem.

Gently lift plant out of the plastic pot. This is to avoid either breaking the stem of the plant or taking the plant out of the soil.

Place in Your Pot Sized Hole.

Take Potting Soil and Fill in the Remaining Gaps in Your Hole

Note: you can use the soil from the hole to fill in the space around the plant and pack the dirt down gently.

Use Fingers and Create an Indented Circle at the Base of the Stem.

Doing this will help the water get to all of the plant.

Water Plant Daily.

Use enough water to where the roots will get some as well. Avoid over-watering. Over-watering meaning when the plants soil starts to run off. Try you best to soak the plant really well then turn off water.

Pick the Peppers.

Generally, the plants are ready to pick after about 2-3 months. By this time, the peppers should be large and brightly colored.

Helpful Hints

helpful things to know about planting your pepper plant:

-If you do not have a shovel handy, a strong knife and spoon will work to dig your plants hole

-If after you plant your pepper plant you notice the bottom leaves turning yellow, your plant is lacking nutrients. In this instance add more fertilizer to enhance nutrients. A good fertilizer for pepper plants is a 5-10-10 fertilizer.

-also, plants leaves can become yellow from too much water, be sure to not over-water

-your plant is going to need a lot of sunlight to grow as well as a lot of water to stay hydrated
