This is how to put fishing line on a fishing pole, or a spinning reel to be specific, if you have never learned before! Not everyone is fortunate enough to have someone teach them the basics of fishing, so let me teach you! It is very simple and only takes a few minutes.

Required Items:

  • Fishing Reel
  • Fishing Line
  • Plyers
  • Tape

Gather Materials

First grab your reel and your line to get ready to tie them.

Tie Knot Around the Reel

First, wrap the end of your line around the reel, and make sure you go under the bail to ensure tension on your line.

Second, Tie a small knot around the reel. This does not need to be a perfect knot, just strong enough to get the first few wraps around it.

-Another option is to tape the line onto the reel, which is what I do because it is easier.

Find an Ideal Place to Set the Line

This part can frustrating because of the way spools of fishing line are designed. Find a place where the spool will not move as you reel in, but also allows for rotation of the reel. I recommend using a pencil and balancing it between two surfaces, but this is optional so whatever way works for you!

Reel in to Desired Length

Many people wonder how much line to actually put on a reel, which is why I included this step. There is no correct answer but I would recommend to reel into where the line extends over the lip slightly, or about 1/3 to 1/2 of the spool.

Run Line Through Guide Rings

Make sure to run the line up through the guide rings on the rod itself. After that, cut the line and tie on a lure or bait!

Tape Off Loose End on Roll

One tip that I would give is to tape off the rest of your line on the spool, so it is easier to manage in-between changing line. Also, use good tape! Some tapes do not like to stick to the spool. If tape is not an option, rubber bands actually work well.
