How to Replace Front Brake Disc Rotors 2004 Honda CRV
How to replace front brake disc rotors on a 2004 Honda CRV
Tools and Materials
- Gloves
- Mechanical Jack Stands
- Jack
- Lug Nut Wrench
- Socket Wrench
- Combination Wrench
- Torque Wrench
- Bar clamp
- Mallet
- Tie wire or Bungee cord
- Brake Cleaner Spray
- Penetrating Oil
- Replacement Rotors
Disassembly
Safety First
- Secure parking brake
- Install wheel choke on the opposite side rear wheel
- Remove cap on brake fluid reservoir
- Loosen wheel lug nuts
- Lift up the car with a jack
- Place a jack stand under the frame
- Lower car on to the jack stand
- Put gloves on
- Remove wheel lug nuts and wheels
- Use/spray brake cleaner on the assembly
- Spray penetrating oil on the rotor retaining screws and center shaft fit
- Loosen and remove brake caliper bolts
- Remove caliper, and use wire/bungie to hang the caliper out of the way without damaging the brake fluid hose
- Take a picture of the brake pads springs for reference during reassembly
- Remove the brake pads and springs
- Loosen and remove the caliper mounting bracket bolts and assembly
- Loosen and remove the rotor retaining screws
- Use mallet to knock the rotor and loosen it from the shaft
- Pull the rotor off the shaft
Install & Reassemble
- Clean the new rotor surfaces with brake cleaner and fine emery cloth or sandpaper
- Wipe clean with more brake cleaner
- Install the new rotor onto shaft and install retaining screws
- Install the caliper mounting bracket, torque bolts to 80 ft-lbs
- Slowly compress the caliper cylinder using a bar clamp
- Install the brake pads and springs, reference picture taken during disassembly step 14
- Install the caliper, torque bolts to 25 ft-lbs
- Install the wheel and hand tighten the lug nuts
- Lift car off the jack stand and remove the stand
- Lower the car back to the groundTighten the lug nuts
- Tighten/restore the brake fluid resevoir cap
- Turn on the car and pump the brakes several times until they don't feel spongy any more
- Test drive car
