How to Serve in Tennis

Knowing how to serve a tennis ball in tennis is crucial. Serving is the first move you do in a match, which includes two tries. During matches, serving would be considered by a lot of professional players the most important skill to have. If serving is done right, It would give you a direct advantage in the match but if not, it might give the advantage to your opponent. Using these 8 easy steps and practicing them will help you serve with more power, accuracy, and ease.

Equipment

Gather a racket and a tennis ball. Wearing sports cloths would help a lot too since the movement is complex.

Position on the Court

Position your self at the baseline, which is the further line from the net. Your body should be on one of the side of the baseline, depending on which square you want your ball to go to. For example, if you are on the right side of the base line, the ball should go to the opposite left square or vice versa

Position of the Feet

Position your feet. One foot must be behind and the other pointing to the opposite net post. For example, if you are on the left side of the baseline, your left foot should be pointing towards the right net post and vice versa. Also, your weight should mostly be put on the front foot.

Tossing Arm Movement

With your hand closest to the foot with the weight on, place your hand parallel to where the leg is pointing at. For example, if your leg is pointing towards the right net post, place your arm and hand towards the right net post.

Toss the ball in the air. Focus on holding the ball with your finger tips, and keep your wrist neutral as you release the ball. Keep your tossing arm straight and open up your fingers as it’s time to release the ball. Also, make sure that your body is still and you toss the ball from the shoulder.

Racket Movement

With your other hand, place the racket behind the head and up. This position is called the trophy position. To get into a perfect trophy pose, reach your tossing arm up to the sky while keeping your serving arm bent at approximately a 90 degree angle. The racket face is still close and your knees should be bent.

Contact

Make contact with the ball with your arm extended straight above your body. You can make contact with the toss at its peak height or you can actually let the ball drop a little. You want to really accelerate the racquet so that the ball explodes off of the strings.

Finish Movement

Finish the swing of your racket completely. You racket should be at either one of your sides
