In this tutorial, we look at the basic steps required to get miktotik setup with internet access via LTE-m

Then setup the lorawan gateway on The things network and see our first data.

Supplies

Eithernet Cable

Mirkotik Knot

LTE-M simcard

Laptop / computer

Install Winbox

On the mirkotik website there is a tool called winbox.

We need this tool to access and configure the gateway.

Setup WiFi Access and Check for Updates.

Always start by getting your device online and updating the firmware to latest version.

This is important as alot of times there are bug fixes and issues that gets addressed in the latest version that you might not be aware of so it's just a good habit.

Setup the PPP Client for the LTE-m Modem

Setting up the modem on the Knot devices can be completed but I tried to make the steps as easy to.follow as possible.

Note that for the first connection is could are up to 20 min to get a good lock.

Tech Tip. Always make sure you have antenna's connected to any wireless devices to avoid damaging them..

The Things Network Setup

If you don't already have an account open a Things network lorawan account and locate the gateway section in the console.

Local the IoT Lorawan Card Settings

In the main menu on winbox local the lorawan device.

Open the device settings and follow the instructions very closely as the information has to be captured correctly.

Copy the EUI number. This is a unique number to your gateway and will stay unique. Setup your server to one of the predefined servers on the mikrtik eu for Europe and US for America

Add the Gateway EUI to TTN and Configure the Gateway Settings

The Eui you just copied needs to be added to TTN. Make sure you check the following

The sub band needs to be the same on the gateway and on ttn

The sub band needs to the same as the intended nodes you wish to add to the network

Enable Lorawan Gateway on Mikrotik

When you completed the ttn setup. You can now enable the lorawan card

The device should be seen on ttn as connected almost immediately but sometimes this only happens when the gateway recive its first message from a end device

So if you have a node it's a good time to start transmitting.

And that's hold be that. You can reboot your gateway anytime andwhere and it should.just connect and work
