How to Sew a Spooky Halloween Apron
In this Instructable I will show you how to sew a spooky Halloween Apron.
This Apron give me pretty, retro but spooky vibes, perfectly suited to your spook aesthetic.
There is no pattern for this project, and it is simple rectangles and triangles, cut to suit your measurements.
Supplies
You will need:
Up to 3 fabrics with different patterns on them, up to half a meter each, by the width of the fabric.
Supplies:
- Sewing machine
- Thread and needles, plus pins
- Scissors or Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Flexible measuring tape
Cutting Your Pieces
There are two sections to the skirt of the apron, and both are unlined and one section to the waistband, which is lined.
Using a flexible measuring tape, measure from one side of your hip to the other side of your hip. This will be the width of the bottom layer of the apron- you can easily add more width here if you would like a fuller apron skirt.
Take a second measurement from the centre of you waist downwards, to the bottom of wear you would like the apron to stop.
To transfer these measurements onto the fabric fold you fabric in half, and measure from the centre fold outwards, and place a mark when you have reached the hip measurement. Measure 8 inches down from this mark as well.
On the centre fold, measure the apron length down from the top line and place another mark.
Connect the marks together and cut the bottom apron skirt piece.
For the top layer of the skirt, take roughly 6 inches from the hip measurement, and mark only 6 inches down from the top line, giving you a les wide, and shorter top section.
When both skirt sections are unfolded, the top edge of the skirt will actually measure double the hip measurement that was taken.
For the waist band you can do a simple rectangle band, or a triangular design like the images.
Cut 2x 6 inch lengths of fabric the run the width of your fabric (from selvedge to selvedge). and fold these in half width-wise.
Measure from one side of you hip to the other and halve the measurement. Measure this distance from the centre fold of the waistband material and mark a spot three inches down from the edges. Draw a line from the top edge of the centre fold to the spot you have marked and continue down the rest of the waistband piece, and then cut the fabric along the line.
Remember- Be mindful of any directional prints your fabric may have.
Assembling the Waistband and Hemming
To assemble the waistband place the two sections right sides together.
The waistband must be left open along the bottom as this will be where the skirt section is inserted later.
Using your hip measurement mark an opening with pins that you will leave unsewn (this must be in the centre of the waistband).
Start from the bottom edge at the first pin, around the side top and bottom, and finish at the second pin.
I recommend hemming the skirt with a rolled hem, using a rolled hem foot on the sewing machine. this will give the skirt a very narrow dainty hem. If your machine does not come or have a rolled hem foot, you can fold the baric up but 1/4 of an inch and press using an iron, and fold again and stitch. This will also give you a small hem, but it is not quite as dainty.
Gathering and Assembling the Skirt
Using a long straight stitch sew two lines of stitching at the top bottom skirt piece, and again for the top skirt piece. Ensure that a long tail is left and the start and end of this line of stitches
Hold onto the two threads on the right side of the fabric and gently tease the fabric down the threads to gather it.
Gather the skirt pieces until they are half the width they were un-gathered.
Attaching the Waistband
Please the two gathered skirt sections on top of each other with both right sides facing up.
You can run these through the sewing machine and secure them together. The stitches, as well as the gathering stitches will be hidden inside the waistband.
Please the apron skirt right sides facing up, and the waistband right side facing down.
Line the top edge of the skirt to the bottom, open edge of the waistband ad line the up so the centre fronts of each piece are matched.
Pin along the the top edge of the apron and then stitch the seam.
Once sewn, flip the apron over so the right side is facing down. The inside of the waistband section will still be open.
Fold the raw edge of the waistband up inside the waistband, and pin the close. This edge will hide any stitches from the gathering, as well as the line of stitching that was just sewn attaching the apron to the waistband.
You ca either close this edge by hand stitching it closed, or run a line o top stitching around the entre waistband which will catch the open edge and sew it down.
Congratulations!
You spooky Halloween Apron is now complete.
You can also use this method and any fabric to create any aesthetic of apron you wish.
