Ever wonder why the latest fashion trend is so expensive? Well, the answer is the demand and the cost of labour for the fashion. Here's an easy to follow step by step tutorial along with my YouTube video teaching how to create a simple panel skirt.

Required Materials

1) Drafting paper

2) Fabric (Approximately 3-4 meters, depending on the waist and length measurement)

3) A Sewing Machine, Thread (according to fabric colour), Scissors, Tailor's Chalk, and pins.

4) Decorative Embellishment as desired

DRAFTING THE PANEL

Begin by drafting a panel onto a drafting paper by measuring the waist and length of the individual. Remember to divide the waist measurement by how many panels you would like the skirt to have and leave about a 1" seaming allowance at the top and bottom for hemming. Note: The more panels there are the more flare the skirt will have.

CUTTING & SEWING

Once, a single panel has been drafted, trace the panel directly onto a fabric (use lining fabric if desired) using a tailor's chalk. Cut each individual panels, leave about 1/4" seaming allowance to stitch each sides together. Lay each panel side by side and secure using pins. Sew together each panels.

Optional: You may choose to create a waist band. If so, using the same fabric or a coordinating fabric using the waist measurement cut out a long rectangular strip. Sew this strip along the top portion of the skirt. Fold in and sew half of the waist band on the wrong side of the fabric.

ENHANCING THE LOOK

Lastly, sew the first and last panel together to finish the complete look of the skirt.

Optional: You may add in a zipper and other decorative items to enhance the look of this skirt.
