How to Throw a Four Seam Fastball
The simplest, yet most effective pitch in the game of baseball. It is the first pitch that every young baseball player learns to throw. By following this simple guide, you'll be throwing the 4-seam fastball effectively in no time.
Supplies
Necessary Supplies:
- Standard Sized Baseball (9-9.25 in)
- Standard Baseball Net with Strikezone (This is not necessary but preferred. Any stationary target will work.)
- Long Distance Measuring Tape (Exceeds 50+ ft)
Set Up Target
Before beginning to throw, it is critical to set up an accurate target. Place your target in an area you are comfortable throwing in. If you are using a standard baseball net as a target, position the net with the side of the strike zone facing the front of your body. (Pictured Above)
Positioning Yourself With the Target
Once your target is set up, stand directly in front of your target. Take 60 consecutive steps backward. Your toe should be touching your heel with each step. Once completed, place your baseball at the spot of your last step as a placeholder. Take out your measuring tape and begin measuring the distance from the baseball to your initial target. If the distance measured exceeds 50+ feet, you are ready to throw. If not, adjust properly until your distance reaches 50+ feet. Make sure not to go further than 60 feet, 6 inches. Once the distance is confirmed, return to the spot where you placed your baseball.
Holding the Baseball
Pick up your baseball with your dominant hand. Once the baseball is in your hand, remove your ring and pinkie finger from the ball. The only fingers left on the ball should be your thumb, index, and middle finger.
Create a 4 Seam Grip
Identify the red seams lined across the baseball. Place your index and ring finger across the horseshoe of the baseball. Make sure the bottom curve of the horseshoe is positioned to the right. Your thumb should be placed underneath the baseball, mainly touching the soft leather portion of the baseball. (Step 1, Picture 2) The proper grip from all angles is pictured above.
Adjusting Grip Tightness
Once your grip is set, apply slight pressure to the baseball with your index and ring fingers. The grip should be firm, but not too tight. Think of holding the ball like you would an egg: tight enough to hold it securely, but not so tight that you crack it. Now you're ready to throw your 4 seam fastball!
Get in Throwing Position
For this particular guide, we will use a slide-step position. Place your feet parallel with one another, slightly further than shoulder-width apart. The shoulder opposite of your dominant hand should be pointing towards the target. Your positioning should mirror picture 1 in the graphic above.
Shifting Your Weight
While maintaining the position in the previous step, begin shifting your weight onto your back leg. (Picture 3)
Note: Make sure not to lift your front foot from the ground
Releasing the Fastball
Push off of your back foot and take a lunging step forward, while simultaneously moving the baseball away from your body. Point your non-throwing arm toward the target. (Picture 4) Plant your front foot and use your momentum to swing your arm towards the target. (Picture 5) Release the 4 seam fastball.
