How to Tie a Bow Tie
This is a tutorial of how to tie a self made bow tie.
Step One
There are a wide range of different types of bow ties to choose from. If it is your first time buying a self made tie, I would recommend one with a thicker material. The bow tie is more likely to stay in place during your event if the tie is made with a stiff material.
Step Two
Put on a button down collared shirt and raise your collar. It is important that you are aware of your neck size so you can adjust the tie size accordingly. If you flip over your tie, you will see many different slots with numbers that correlate with your neck size. You should put the tie on so that the shorter end (based off where the metal piece is.) is on your left.
Step Three
Adjust it so that the tie is longer on your right side than it is on your left. (It is very important that you pay attention to what side I instruct you to use. Otherwise it will not work in the last few steps)
Step Four
Take the longer side on your right and cross it over the shorter side on your left.
Step Five
Now, lift the longer side behind the shorter one and pull it through the hole created right below your neck and pull both sides tight.
Step Six
Create a cross by holding the shorter end in front of the now vertical long end. Then you should take the vertical piece and put it in front of the shorter end.
Step Seven
Now, fold the smaller end over the vertical piece. It is important that you make sure the small piece is as close to the top of the vertical one. Observe the hole that was created between the two pieces.
Step Eight
Now take your index finger and thumb and fold the vertical piece in half. Then take the fold (of the vertical piece) and insert it into the hole that was created in the previous step. Make sure you only pull the folded piece half way through. You know if your did this step properly because you should be able to have two bows together.
Step Nine
This step is optional. In order to tighten your adjust your tie, you should take the left side of the bow in the front and the right side of the bow in the back and gently pull it in the outward direction. (Only pull about a centimeter). Then switch, take the right side of the front bow and the left side of the back bow and pull outward. You will continue going back and forth until you are satisfied with the ties tightness.
