How to Tie a Half Windsor Knot Neck Tie

The Half Windsor Knot is a specific way to tie your neck tie. There are several different ways to tie your neck tie, but this is a more common style

The materials necessary to make the Half Windsor Knot is simple

1. Neck Tie
2. Two hands

The neck tie is customarily wore in collaboration with a collard shirt, but for the purpose of the instructable, I will only be showing how to tie the tie

To start your tie, place the tie around your neck. It is important that the broad end of the tie hangs lower than the narrower end of the tie. This is important so that when the tie is tied the length of the tie comes out correctly

The next step of tying the half windsor tie, is to cross your tie. To cross your tie, you will take the broad end of your tie, and cross it over the top of the narrow end of the tie. Then, you will pinch where the two sides of the tie intersect

The next step is the tuck.

While continuing to pinch the intersection of the two parts of the tie, you will take the broad end of your tie and stick it through the loop you made during the intersection when you crossed the tie in step 3

• It is important that when you stick the broad end of the tie through the loop that you stick it through the loop from behind

Once you stick it through the loop pull the tie tight

• When you are finished with this step you will see the initial formation of the knot being tied

BE SURE that you are still pinching the intersection of your knot or it will not come out right

Once you have successfully completed your tuck, you can proceed to step 5, Cross Behind

In this step, you take the broad end of your tie and cross it to the opposite side, across your knot.

• Whichever side the broad end of your tie was on first, once you complete the cross behind, your broad end of the tie will be on the opposite side.

BE SURE that you are still pinching the intersection of that original knot

Once you completed step 5, you move on to the similar step 6, the Cross in Front.

After you completed the cross behind, the tie is on the opposite side of your body. With the cross in front, you're going to bring the tie back to the original side, covering your knot that you made

• Make sure that you cover the knot to the tie, or it will come out looking sloppy

Again, BE SURE that you're still pinching your knot in the intersection of the two parts of the tie

Once you completed the cross in front, you can go into your second tuck

Once your tie is crossed in front and the knot is being covered, you can go into your second Tuck. Just like your first tuck you go into the loop from behind.

BE SURE you are still gripping the intersection to your tie or the knot will become loose and sloppy

Once you get passed the second tuck, you're almost home free

The next step is opening up the knot. Now this step is the most complicated out of all the steps. With the hand you're pinching the knot with, you're going to simply open up your front cross just enough so that you can slip the head of your tie into.

• Try not to open up your front cross too big or the knot will become sloppy
• At this time it is not necessary for you to continue to pinch the intersection where your knot is

Once you have opened up your front cross and have initially started to push the head through, the next step is the pull through

With the opposite hand that you used to open up your front cross, use it to reach into the bottom of your knot and pull the head of the tie through the knot.

• You are going to pull the head of the tie, until the tie won't go down farther
• Make sure that you pull tight, so that you have a nice crisp knot

Once you finish step 9, you're basically done. The final step of tying your Half Windsor knot is just straightening and puling up the knot.

To pull up your knot, you will take the tail of the tie in one hand, and grasp the knot of your tie in the other hand. While you pull down on the tail of your tie, you're going to hold your knot and raise it toward your neck.

Once you raise it to your neck, you can straighten your tie up

Once you finish this step, you have completed your Half Windsor knot
