How to Build a Lego St. Anthony's Chapel

P1030605.JPG
This instructable will show you how to make a lego replica of St. Anthony's Chapel, the world's smallest church located in rural Festina, IA.

Creating the Base

P1030610.JPG
Obtain three 8x1x1 pieces, one 6x1x1 piece, and one 8x2x1 piece.  Arrange them to form the left configuration.  This will form the church's base.

The Second "Level"

P1030610.JPG
Now obtain twelve 2x1x1 pieces and two 1x1x1 pieces.  Arrange them to create the right configuration.  Now imagine picking the right configuration as a whole and placing it on top of the left configuration, aligning the back corners.  Piece by piece, perform this procedure.  The resulting structure is the left configuration on the next step.  There should be two unfitted pegs adjacent to each other in the middle of the back 8x1x1 base piece, two unfitted pegs adjacent to each other in the middle of the yellow 6x1x1 base piece, and two unfitted pegs in each of the blue 8x1x1 base pieces not adjacent to each other.  All front row pegs and the middle four back row pegs of the the 8x2x1 piece should be unfitted.

The Third Level

P1030609.JPG
Obtain four 3x1x1 pieces, four 2x1x1 pieces, and two 1x1x1 pieces and create the configuration on the right (The right figure is again intended to depict a 2 peg wide gap in the back and the front, and two 1 peg gaps on both sides.).  Again, imagine picking the entire right configuration up and placing it on top of the left configuration, aligning the back corners.  Now perform this procedure piece by piece.

The Fourth Level

Add a fourth level identical to the third level. This time you can use any convenient pieces.  The structure should now be the left configuration.

The Fifth Level

P1030608 (1).JPG
Now obtain three 6x2x1 pieces, one 4x2x1 piece, one 3x2x1 piece, and one 2x1x1 piece and create the configuration on the right.  Imagine picking up the entire right configuration and placing it on top of the left configuration, aligning the back corners.  Now perform this procedure piece by piece.  The resulting structure is depicted in the next step as the left figure.

The Sixth Level

P1030607 (1).JPG
Select any combination of pieces (the use of  _x2x1 pieces are preferable) to create a 9x6x1 "block" of legos.  This will form the base of the right configuration.

The Seventh Level

P1030607 (1).JPG
Now select any combination of pieces to create a 9x4x1 "block" of legos.  Stack and center this block on the 9x6x1 block created in the previous step so that the two blocks stay together when lifted (you may have to reconfigure one or both blocks.).  The 9x6x1 block is the second level of the right configuration.

The Eighth Level

P1030607 (1).JPG
Select any combination of pieces to create a 9x2x1 block.  Stack and center this block on the 9x4x1 block so that the 9x2x1 block is the third level of the right configuration.  You should now have a structure composed of the block created in step 6, the block created in step 7, and this 9x2x1 block.  This structure is depicted as the right configuration.  If this structure does not stay together when lifted, reconfigure one, two, or all of the blocks so that it does.

Attaching the Sixth, Seventh, and Eight Levels

P1030607 (1).JPG
Pick up the right configuration and stack and center it on the fifth level of the left configuration.  The resulting structure is the left configuration on the next step.

The Cross

P1030606 (1).JPG
Obtain two white 2x1x1 pieces and one white 4x1x1 piece.  Select one 2x1x1 piece.  Stack and center the 4x1x1 piece on top of this 2x1x1 piece.  Now stack and center the remaining 2x1x1 piece on top of the 4x1x1 piece.  The resulting structure is the right configuration.  You have now created the church's cross.  To mount it, place it on the front two pegs of the eight level.  The church is now complete.
