How to Check for Radiation (from Fukashima)
Fukashima has been touted as the death of the world .. others poo-poo it.
Why take the chance ? Get / make a geiger counter.
Years ago I purchased a kit, started with it,purchased a russian ion tube, purchased a different kit, - they both have sat..
Now it's time to finish, and I hope to get encouragement from the community to do this !!!
(this is an ongoing 'able and this is the start of it )

But wait, it is declared by 'officials' that there are "safe spots " \!

Get the Kit
These are available mostly online - I have not seen any walk-in store like radio shack that has something like this to put together - You can buy from on-line, already assembled for ^$. I have not seen any store that sells a geiger counter without it being extremely costly.
I am not going to list a bunch of soldering tools needed to assemble the kit, as it is presumed you have done this and have these if you are attempting to put a kit together.
Notice in this particular kit, it is missing the tube.
