How to Make a Great Wooden Spear

Wooden Spear Complete.jpg
This Instructable will teach you how to make a very sturdy wooden spear.

It should cost you about about $1, although you will need to get your hands on a piece of hickory, which is almost never found at your ordinary home depot.
You will also need thick tape such as gorilla tape to make the handle well. If you want to though, you can use a leather tennis racket grip for more comfort and authenticism.

Get the Wood

Probably the hardest part of this project is getting the wood. You need a strip of hickory about a half inch thick and 6 or 7 feet long and an inch wide. (see pic)

You are not going to get hickory at your everyday Home Depot. Some wood there will work if no hickory can be found. It must be very hard wood seeing as it will be thin so pine will be your second choice.

Putting It All Together

First you want to round the edges with an electric sander or sandpaper. Then, sharpen the tip with any pocketknife. BE VERY CAREFUL!!! I'm not giving you safety precautions that you might cut yourself and bla bla bla. This is a simple job and its not that dangerous. But I have worked with hickory a ton and if there is one thing I've learned it's that hickory STRIPS EXTREMELY EASILY!!!!
You will think you are going to take off a standard-size strip but then your knife will get wedged in and the following list of very bad things may happen.

-your knife will break
-the wood will break in half
-the wood will explode
-the wood will split into millions of tiny pieces

Its really not that hard though. The reason for this is that hickory is so hard. people press harder and harder and before they know it they are sitting in a pile of splinters thinking that that guy who told them how to do this is a loser.

So, Just go slow and accept the little shavings your knife is taking off. Eventually you will have a very sharp tip.

The Handle

Boy that last step was long. Now you will need to attach the handle. Simply wrap the wood in tape or the grip about five feet from the bottom. You now have a very effective wooden spear!
