How to Make a Grappling Hook
Hello to all you. Have you ever wanted a grappling hook like a superhero would use? Today we are going to make one out of everyday hardware that you can get from any store you can get hardware from.
Let's begin shall we
Supplies
You will need
1- 3/8'' x 8'' i-bolt
3 -3/8'' nuts
3-¼ x 6'' I-bolts( you can get shorter if you want)
2-3/8'' washers
1 roll of duck tape
2 pairs of pliers or 2 wrenches to tighten the bolts
a bench vice
a hammer
an implement for cutting the bolts such as a hacksaw or bolt cutters(if needed)
Add the First Nut
Take your 3/8'' x 8 inch I-bolt and screw the first 3/8th's nut down to roughly 1& 5/8 '' on the I-bolt
Add Second Nut
take your second 3/8'' nut ,screw it down tightly next to the first nut on the i-bolt. Then take your 2 pairs of pliers and tighten them as firmly together as possible in place
Add Washer
Slide your first washer onto the i-bolt next on top of the nuts you previously tightened together
Bending & Shaping the Hooks
First take your 3 - ¼ x 6'' I bolts & clamp them into a bench vice next to each other as closely aligned as possible.
Then take your hammer and carefully bend the rods of the three i-bolts to roughly a 45 degree angle.
After you have made the bends in the 1/4x 6'' I bolts measure roughly 2 inches from the end on the opposite side of the hook point and cut them on that point. ( I didn't think about it until later that I could have gotten shorter I-bolts)
on the picture is what you should have
Tape the Bolt & Add the Forks
Wrap your 3/8x 8inch I bolt with 2 nuts & the washer on it with a roughly ¾'' wide strip of duck tape long enough to go around 10 to 11 times or just enough to hold the modified 1/4'' I-bolts centered snugly. Then slide your modified 1/4'' i'bolts over the tape like shown in the second picture.
put the final washer on top of the hooks then screw the nut on loosely. then adjust the hooks into a triangle formation. Then tighten the top & bottom nuts together. Then you could put some rope through the hook in the bottom if you wanted to.
Then at last you finally have your own grappling hook.
SAFETY NOTE:( This is not meant for climbing anything. It's a proof of concept. But If you wanted to you make something like this actually work to a degree you'd just have to use heavier made materials to make it. But that's at your own risk.) Be safe & have fun out there, Peace.
