How to Make a Stainless Ring

Hey this is my first instructable. I made a simple ring out of stainless steel pipe.

You will have to enlarge some of the images as it doesn't show some of them properly minimized.

• Stainless steel pipe
• Hacksaw or angle grinder
• Pipe grips
• Piece of tube to bend pipe round
• Files, sanding paper/drill attachments, scotch pad
• Welder
• Wire brush
• Vice & workbench
• Tape measure
• Hammer
• PPE

Not everything here you will need, it's just what I used, there are probably many alternatives if you don't have all of these things. Although you will need a welder.

The pipe I used had an OD of 6mm and an ID of 3mm. Thickness 1.5mm.

I cut this at approx 52cm (520mm) in length

The tube I used to bend the pipe round was 1.5 inch (38.1mm).

I clamped the pipe at the top of the jaws on the vice pressing against the 1.5 inch tube.

I could wrap it round by hand fairly easily apart from the last bit which I used the pipe grips for and a hammer to knock in the end.

The best way I found to bring the ends together was to squeeze the ends towards each other with the pipe grips and then clamped it in the vice at the same time. This brought the ends together evenly and square.

Whilst still in the vice I tacked the ends together with a TIG welder.

MIG or stick will probably do the job, although tacking it may be a little trickier, also filing down the welds after will be much harder, will just take a bit longer.

I had the welder on 24 amps which seemed to work fine whilst welding up.

Firstly I went over with a wire brush.

I got away with just using one file with the half round edge. Although as round one would do the trick.

I used a sanding attachment with the drill to help clean up and finished with some green scotch pads.

Job done!
