How to Tie a Tie (windsor Knot)

Wearing a tie can help you make a good impression.  This is a step by step tutorial on how to get it tied right. 

Getting Started

Place tie over your shoulders with the wide end hanging over your left shoulder.  Make sure your collar is up.  Adjust the tie so that you only have about a foot hanging on your right side.   

Cross Over

Cross the left end over the right end about 4-6 inches past the tip of the short end.

Loop Behind

Pinch the cross-over and pull the wide end up behind the cross-over to make a loop.  After you have pulled the wide end out of the loop, make sure that it hangs to the left side of the knot. 

Around the Back

Take the wide end at your left and pull it around the back.  Pull tight.

Loop Over the Front

Pull the wide end over the front of the knot and through the hole.  Tighten to the left.

Loop Behind Again

Pull the wide end around the front and back again and up through the hole.   

Inside the Knot

Pull the wide end through the knot behind the front layer of the tie which you just wrapped around the knot in Step 6.  

Tighten

Pull the wide end down to tighten up the knot.  Make sure it looks good as you tighten it.

Finish Up

Pull on the thinner end and push up on the knot to pull the knot up to your collar.  Fix your collar and you're done!
