Hyottoko Mask - ED24B054

I am Karthik Rishi J, ED24B054, and a student of IIT Madras.

This is my step-by-step instruction on how to recreate the Hyottoko mask from ancient Japan.

1. Paper Clay
2. Water
3. Spare Newspapers
4. Gauze Cloth (optional)
5. Masking Tape
6. Clay Modelling Tools
7. Whitewash
8. Water-colour and Paintbrush
9. Styrofoam
10. Box Cutter
11. Super Glue

Use newspaper and masking tape on a flat surface to create the base. Add some extra newspaper balls to create the extruded cheeks (and any other attachments you may want like horns). Do not add anything for the mouth yet. Place a layer of gauze cloth on top of this if you wish to.

Use some paper clay and water to create the general shape of your mask. Add basic features like thicker cheeks and the nose. Ensure leaving gaps for eyes.

For the mouth, flatten a strip of paper clay, and roll it to create a loop. Adjust the lengths and ratios of the strip to perfect the shape. Attach with paste (water and clay mixture).

Use your clay tools and make fine adjustments to your mask. Create holes for the string of the mask and add details to the eyebrows and forehead.

You can now remove the newspaper base, but let the gauze cloth remain. Let it dry for a week. Then, remove the gauze cloth(This is to ensure you can fix the mask with paste easily in the case of an accident). Add a coat of whitewash, and let it dry for 10 minutes.

Use water colours to paint the basic colours onto the mask first. Mix and experiment with colours, and find a unique shade that's to your liking.

Finalize your colours and apply another coat to make the colour richer. Let it dry for a bit, attach the string, and the mask is done.

For the stand, just measure the dimensions of the mask and use the box cutter on styrofoam and some super glue to create the stand.
