Kali Linux 2016.1 on an Old Dell Vostro Laptop AMD 64bit CPU
How To Download, Burn, and Live Install the new Kali Linux-2016.1 on an old Dell Vostro 1000 laptop!
Find an Old Laptop or PC to Install Kali Linux 2016.1 NEWEST RELEASE AMD64
I have had this old Dell Vostro 1000 for years now. It originally had Windows XP. I also installed Back Track 5 as a dual boot. I wanted to upgrade Back Track 5, which is now Kali Linux. So this is how I did it.
Download the ISO for Kali-Linux-Light-2016.1 for AMD64 CPU
Download the ISO for Kali-Linux-2016.1
http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2016.1/
This Dell happens to have a 64bit AMD CPU so choose:
kali-linux-2016.1-amd64.iso
or
kali-linux-light-2016.1-amd64.iso
-
Download Win32 Disk Imager for burning the ISO to a USB drive / SD card.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/fi...
Now, using Windows you can burn your Kali Linux ISO to a USB drive and it will be ready to boot the Live Installation Mode.
-
Reboot your computer
Live Install Mode
Once you reboot your computer you are almost ready to boot Kali Linux Live install. But first, you have to know how to trigger a one-time boot menu from your BIOS. On the Dell Vostro 1000 you have to hit F12 to enter the boot mode once the BIOS starts loading up.
-
Select USB drive
-
You are now booting into Live Install ! - I chose Graphical Install from the Kali GRUB bootloader menu.
-
Choose your keyboard and language
*******
PRO - TIP # Connect your Ethernet cable from your router directly to your laptop. Kali Linux will need to get mirror updates while installing the OS, otherwise it will not work out.
*******
Select which drive to install Kali Linux to. I chose to wipe my whole hard drive and do a Guided Partition. I chose for /root and /home to have seperate partitions. I had trouble doing a manual partition and then getting Kali to boot to it automatically. So I let Kali make the partition table and it worked out great. After the partitioning is complete Kali Linux will now install the OS onto your laptop hard drive.
-
After the OS files have installed, Install GRUB bootloader on your Master Boot Record of your First Hard Drive. My hard drive was /dev/sda
-
After finishing the Kali Live install, reboot your computer. Your computer should now automatically start the Kali GRUB bootloader menu. This will have Kali Linux on the list of available OS to boot.
SUCCESS! Kali Linux 2016.1 Is Now Running on Your Laptop !
Your old clunky laptop now has a collection of the most powerful Network Security Tools on the planet! I must admit, this laptop now runs better, smoother, and faster than ever. I can stream YouTube, write instructables, and browse the Net all at the same time.
