Kazoo

A kazoo is a member of the membranophone family of instruments. A membranophone uses a membrane or resonator to produce sound. When you hum, talk or sing into a kazoo the air produced by your voice vibrates the membrane or resonator creating its unique buzzing sound.

• Wax paper or aluminum foil
• Rubber bands
• Toilet paper roll or paper towel roll
• Scissors
• Paint, markers, colored pencils, stickers, etc. (something to decorate your kazoo with)
• Paintbrush

If you are using paint to decorate, start with a coat of white paint. This will help your other colors stand out and pop! Add a second color and design as you wish!

Use a bowl or other circular object to trace a circle on at least 12” of wax paper. This will ensure that you have enough wax paper to cover your toilet paper roll. Carefully cut out your membrane from the wax paper.

Center the wax paper with the toilet paper roll. Then fold it down so it is tight on the top. Use your other hand to to secure the wax paper with a rubber band.

Carefully poke a hole in the side.

Hum, talk or sing into your kazoo to hear its unique buzzing sound!

Experiment with different sizes and materials. Create a longer, deeper sounding kazoo by using a paper towel roll. Try different materials for your membrane such as aluminum foil or parchment paper to see how the sound changes.
