Keyboard Robots

keyboard robot - Copy.jpg

Make these cute little critters! All it takes is imagination and a few supplies. I drilled little holes in the keys for the wires. This step requires an adult, but the rest of this project is suitable for kids.

Collect Your Supplies

Pop the keys off those old keyboards. Laptops of desktops keyboard will do. Laptop keys are very flat. If you are looking for that really 3D effect, you want desktop keyboards.

Once you get the first key off, it is easy to pry up the next one with a small flat head screw driver. you should not have to work at it very hard.

Other supplies you need:

  • Wire
  • Beads
  • Googley eyes
  • Hot glue gun
  • Drill
  • Wire snips
  • Needle nose plyers

Make a Plan

layout your keys and make sure they look the way you want. Don't forget to think about orientation of anything printed on the keys as well.

Drill Holes for the Legs

Choose a location for the legs and drill enough holes for as many legs as you desire.

Add Legs

You can add beads on the end, or twist the wire into interesting shapes.

You can twist the wires on to let the wiggle or hot glue them once they go through. Hot glue does tend to wear after a while, but it is easier for little fingers.

Add Arms!

drill holes for the arms and run the wire through.

Add one bead at the desired distance from the body and twist the wire around it.
Add subsequent beads until you have enough fingers.

Add Antena (optional)

Drill holes for the number of wires you want coming out of its head.
You can run the wires through and twist them or glue them in. I decided to twist it and decorate each end using one hole.

Connect the Head and the Body Together

You can hot glue the two joints together, or drill holes and use wire if you want them to move.

You can use little beads, little buttons, or googly eyes. One or more will do the trick!
