Keyboard Sandals

I had two unused keyboards lying around on my floor. When I stepped on them it felt extremely comfortable. This inspired me to build a pair of shoes out of them. I am not experienced at all in shoe making but I thought it would be fun to try and make some simple sandals.

First you should take apart the two keyboards. The ones I used were different kinds but it didn't really matter. when I took one apart all the rubber bits fell out this was a shame as it did not have the same amount of bounce as the other keyboard.

Next you need to measure your feet to see how much of the keyboards you need to use. Then with a permanent marker put a cross on the keys that you want to cut off. I thought that the keys at the back of the keyboard didn't really need cutting as I like the square back. However if you feel it is necessary then measure at the back as well.

To cut both keyboards to size use a hacksaw. Be careful with the plastic keyboard as it felt like it was going to snap. The metal keyboard was very hard to cut. In the end I bent some of the metal over as it was taking forever to cut. However if you have a better saw than me it will probably cut much faster.

Making the straps is super easy. You need to use duct tape and aluminium plumbers tape. First make the toe strap by sticking two pieces of duct tape together so that there is no sticky face showing. After cutting the strap down to the correct length cover one side with the aluminium tape. Then draw a template on a piece of paper for the back and ankle strap. Cut out and cover both sides of the paper with duct tape. Then cover another side with the aluminum tape. Then repeat for the other shoe.

Add a small piece of Velcro to both sides of the strap. This is so the shoe can easily be taken on and off. It is a good idea to try them on before applying the Velcro. This is so that you can get it in the right position and the strap isn't too tight or too loose.

I felt like the edges looked unfinished. My fist idea was to put some cloth around the edge however I couldn't sew a seam onto some cloth as my sewing machine wasn't working. Instead I decided it would look good to add some pipe cleaners. To fix the pipe cleaners onto the edge of the shoe you should first use double sided tape and then apply some uhu glue.

The sandals themselves were very comfortable as the keys press down as you walk. These are very unusual shoes and well worth the effort of making. Hope that you enjoyed reading about what I made.
