From Kick Drum To Coffee Table In Under 1 Hour // 1hourbuilds // woodworking

I love up-cycling junk and when my neighbour asked me to turn this old drum into a table i just had to say yes!

The table turned out amazing and my neighbour couldnt be happier.

It was requested that the drum stay in its current condition but you could always clean up yours with some paint and some polish.

It was decided that I would use as much scrap as possible to save on cost but you could use some store bought timber for the top if you wanted a cleaner look.

With that lets get started!!

Supplies

plywood

screws

rubber feat

pallets

right angle brackets

drill

jigsaw

Disassemble Drum

To start you will need to remove both the front and back hoops.

This can be done buy either loosening or completely removing the lugs. I chose to remove the lugs to reduce the risk of damaging or bending them. Beware if you remove them that they are in 3 parts and easy to lose.

If your drum still has the reso head and batter head on the can be thrown away or saved for another project.

My drum didn't have the legs but if it did i would remove those as well whilst leaving the hardware for them attached to the drum.

Cut Plywood Inserts

I didn't have any plywood big enough so i cut two lengths and screwed them together using pocket holes.

If you have big enough sheets already you can skip the pocket holes :)

I cut out two squares big enough to cover the drum openings.

Cutout Plywood Circles

Using one of the hoops mark out the inside diameter on one of the plywood panels.

With the two panels screwed together use a jigsaw to cut out the circles.

Once the two circles are cut out unscrew them and cut a circle into the centre of one of the circles big enough to fit a drill through.

**You could also use a router with a circle jig**

Clean Up Pallets (optional)

After pulling apart the pallets and removing the nails you can run them through a thicknesser/planer to clean up both faces.

And with a table saw you can clean up the edges.

** You could also purchase timber from your local hardware store instead of using pallets if this is the case skip this step**

Screw and Cutout Top

Once you have all of your boards for the top. Screw them to one side of the plywood to create top of the table.

Using a jigsaw cut out the top to match the plywood base from underneath.

** This could also be done with a router and a flush cut bit**

Cleanup Top

Sand the top up to at least 120grit and using a router with a round over bit add a round over around the top.

** You could also use a chamfer bit or similar for a different look**

Assemble

Reassemble the drum with the top panel in place.

Using some metal straps attach the top and bottom from the inside.

I was lucky that my brackets holes lined up with the bolts for the lug holders and i didn't have to screw into the side of the drum.

Attach Feet (optional)

I found these rubber feet in my scrap bin but they are not necessary.
