Lamp Shade - Voronoi Cylinder

This project uses Rhino + Grasshopper software to build a lamp shade. I followed this excellent tutorial on Youtube (https://youtu.be/eEHSlWYHD5g) and modified it for my use case. This is still a work in progress as I have a couple of TODOs before I can 3d print this design.

Rhino - Initial Design

The designing is quite simplistic and most of the work is offloaded to Grasshopper for finetuning parameters. The only thing I do in the Rhino environment is create the initial cylinder which will act as my lamp shade. The diameter of the base circle in the cylinder will be the same as the diameter of the base on which the lamp shade will sit on.

Grasshopper Design

Most of the heavy lifting is done by the Grasshopper component. First, The cylinder created in Rhino is connected to the Geometric Component in Grasshopper. Then the main components in the Grasshopper are the Populate Geometry element which fills the surface of cylinder with points. The Voronoi 3D component creates the edges between the points on these surface. The next important aspect is the Scale component which create a scaled down version of the same cylinder inwards.

TODOs

  1. Remove the Voronoi edges on the bottom and create a base with hole in the center for the lamp.
  2. 3D print the design.
