This is a laptop cooling pad I made that cost me just around $2 and a few things lying around.

Supplies

Things you need :

  • Hardboard writing pad (with the clip removed) - 1
  • Computer cabinet cooler fans 5v - 2
  • Bolts and nuts for the fans
  • Door stop buffers (large) - 4
  • Door stop buffers (small) - 4
  • Bolts and nuts
    • length matching heights of small buffer + large buffer + 1cm - 4
    • length matching height of fan + 0.5cm - 8
  • USB cable from an old mouse or keyboard

Tools you need :

  • A cutter / blade strong enough to cut through the hardboard
  • A divider / compass
  • Electrical tape

Marking and Cutting

Place the laptop on top of the hardboard and mark the positions where the rubber feet/buttons of the laptop rest. (the four corners of the board)

Also mark the positions of the air vents on the laptop (I have two vents at the bottom).

Position the fans on the vent positions and draw the outlines of the fans.

Mark and cut out the circle for the fans.

Attaching the Fans and Wires

Attach the fans to the board with the bolts and nuts.

When attaching the fans, make sure that they are sucking the air from the top and blowing it out the side you are attaching. If they are not, then just flip the fans over.

Strip a bit of the wire from the USB cable and identify the wires for the power (they are normally the ones in red and black). We need only those two.

Join the wires to the ones on the fan and tape them with electrical tape to prevent shorts

Attaching the Stands

Take the smaller door stopper and place them on the four corners marked.

Place the bigger door stoppers exactly below them and attach them using the bolts and nuts.
