Learn to Use 123D Design

We made these boxes to represent the layers of social media for an English project. In order to create a visual representation of how the layers of social media interconnect, we created boxes that fit inside one another. To further show that the boxes represent social media we put icons on each box. Because this project uses some of the basic tools of 123D Design, it is a really helpful project for beginning designers who want to become more familiar with very simple uses of the software. The completion of this design should take around 20 minutes.

1.Click on ‘Primitives’ icon in the top toolbar

2.Click on the box icon

3.Enter the dimensions

• Length: 75

4.Click on ‘Primitives’ in the toolbar and select ‘Rectangle’

5.Hover and align the rectangle shape on top of the box

6.Enter the dimensions

7.Left click on the top of the box to connect the 2D rectangle

8.Left click on the 2D rectangle to access the settings icon

9.Hover over the settings icon and select the Extrude icon on the toolbar

10.Enter ‘71’ in the box that pops up

11.Left click again on the box to extrude the box

7. Left click on the top of the box to connect the 2D rectangle

8. Left click on the 2D rectangle to access the settings icon

9. Hover over the settings icon and select the Extrude icon on the toolbar

10. Enter ‘45’ in the box that pops up

11. Left click again on the box to extrude the box

3. Click on ‘Primitives’ and select ‘Rectangle’ from the toolbar

4. Hover over the top of the lid

6. Left click on the lid to apply 2D rectangle

7. Left click on the lid to access the settings icon

8. Hover over the settings icon and select the Extrude icon

9. Enter ‘11’ in the box that pops up and hit Enter on the keyboard to apply

3. Click on ‘Primitives’ and select ‘Rectangle’ from the toolbar

4. Hover over the top of the lid

• Length: 62.3

6. Left click on the lid to apply 2D rectangle

7. Left click on the lid to access the settings icon

8. Hover over the settings icon and select the Extrude icon

9. Enter ‘11’ in the box that pops up and hit enter on the keyboard to apply

1. Click on ‘Primitives’ in the toolbar at the top and select ‘Circle’

• Enter the Radius: 6.5
• Hit Enter to apply

2. Click on ‘Primitives’ in the toolbar and select ‘Circle’

• Hover the second circle over the first circle
• Enter the Radius: 8.0
• Hit Enter to apply
• Left click on the surface of the second circle and select the settings icon
• Select the ‘Move’ icon Click on the arrow that points upwards
• Enter the height: 17

3. Click ‘Primitives’ in the toolbar and select ‘Circle’

• Hover the third circle over the smallest one on the bottom
• Enter the Radius: 4.5
• Select the surface of the third circle and select the ‘Move’ icon from the settings icon toolbar
• Select the arrow pointing up to move the circle up
• Enter the height: 25

4. Hold the shift key to select multiple shapes by clicking on the surfaces of the circles

• Select the ‘Loft’ icon from the settings icon

5. Click ‘Primitives’ from the top toolbar and select ‘Sphere’

• Enter the Radius: 6
• Place the sphere on top of the body, it will auto-center
• Left click on the sphere and select ‘Move’ from the settings icon toolbar
• Select and hold the arrow pointing up and drag the sphere down to connect with the body(2.00mm)

6. Click on ‘Combine’ from the top toolbar and select ‘Merge’

• Left click on both the body and sphere

7. To check that the two objects merged

• Select the object
• Click ‘Move’ from the settings toolbar and move the object to see if the two shapes are connected

1. Search for the image you want as vector

2. Copy the link for the image

3. Go to “image.online-convert.com/convert-to-svg”, or you can use any other vector to svg converter.

4. Paste the link and convert the image. Save.

5. Open the menu on top left.

6. Go to Import, and click SVG as sketch.

7. Open the image that you want to make an icon with.

8. For choosing SVG source, select Inkscape, then hit OK.

1. Go back to 123D Design and Import the image.

2. Scale the image.

3. Extrude the image an amount that is thicker the wall.

4. Rotate the image.

5. Use the snap tool to connect the icon to the box.

1. Click the face of the icon.
2. Click the face of the box you want the icon to connect to.

6. Move the icon so that it intersects the wall Use subtract tool to make a hole that is shape of the icon.

1. Click the box.
2. Click the icon to remove.

1. Repeat the steps a to e in step 8 to create an icon.
2. Move the icon so that only the part of the image intersects the wall, the background of the icon should not touch the wall.
3. Use subtract tool to make a hole that is shape of the icon.
   1. Click the box.
   2. Click the icon to remove.

1. Repeat the steps a to e in step 8 to create an icon.
2. This box won’t have a hole, so we only need to combine the icon with the box. Use the snap tool to connect the icon to the box.
   1. Click the face of the icon.
   2. Click the face of the box you want the icon to connect to.

If you happen to print this project and the lids do not fit the boxes, sand the walls of the boxes until the lids fit.

1. Use sand paper (The box is too weak too handle a sanding machine)

2. Sand each wall of the box

3. Check to see if the lid fits the correct box, continue sanding until the lid fits
