Leg Warmer for Boots
A great fall trend in the recent years are knitted leg warmers for all the trendy boots. I decided I wanted to try to make some new leg warmers from a thrift store sweater I found.
Supplies
Here are the supplies I used for my leg warmers
Old Sweater
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Cut Sweater
This was the most intimidating part of the project. Since the sweater is a woven fabric, it can come undone quite easily.
I started by carefully cutting each sleeve off of the sweater. I was careful not to pull or manipulate the fabric too much so I didn't fray the fabric.
Finally I flipped the sleeve so the wrong side of the fabric faced the outside.
Hem the Cut Side of the Sleeve
To stop any additional fraying I immediately hemmed the raw edge side of the sleeve I just cut.
To hem the end I folded the end over and sewed the the end, leaving a nice hemmed edge at the end.
Measure and Sew to Fit
My next task was to adjust the legging to fit my leg.
Since I wanted the end of the sleeve (the ribbing end) to show through the top of the boot, I slid that on first, keeping the wrong side out.
I then measured the legging around my leg and pinned it so it was a snug fit.
Carefully I slid the legging off and sewed it along my pin line, and then cut off the excess.
NOTE: I sewed the legging before I cut it to eliminate fraying as much as I could.
After sewing each legging fit perfectly!
Wear!
Now my legging were ready to wear out on the town. To put them on I slide the leggings on over my jeans then slip my boots on over top.
I was very happy with how they looked at the end, and they keep my legs very warm, great for a nice fall day.
Enjoy!
