Light-Up Dog Outfit

I have always found it hard to find my dog in the night because of her dark coat. I love making her clothes and dressing her up. The shirt makes her easy to see and stylish too! This is a four step process to make your dog be seen in the dark. My time estimation is around three hours though times may vary base on the size of your dog outfit.

For this project you need the following:

  • Dog Shirt
  • Sewing Needles
  • Thread (same/similar colour as shirt)
  • Sewing Scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Extra Fabric (I used felt)
  • Fairy Lights

The extra fabric should be able to wrap around the battery box for the lights.

Battery Pocket

  1. Measure and cut fabric to fit the size of your battery pack on the fairy lights.
  2. Knot and string thread onto needle.
  3. Sew edges of pocket, but leave one short side open.

Sew Pocket

  1. Turn shirt inside out.
  2. Knot and string thread onto needle.
  3. Sew one side of the pocket to the collar of the shirt (pocket should rest on the dogs back).
  4. You may need to do this a few times depending on how heavy the battery pack is.
  5. Place battery pack in pocket with switch for the lights facing the outside.
  6. This is so you are able to turn it on and off without taking it out.
  7. Turn shirt right-side out.

Lay Out Light Pattern

  1. Turn lights on so you are able to see where they will be placed on the shirt.
  2. Pin the light strand in a design of your choice (I chose a spiral design but there are many others).
  3. If you leave the lights turned on it makes it easier to sew.

Stitch on Lights

  1. Knot and double string thread onto needle.
  2. Make individual stitches around the light string.
  3. If you want the lights to stay still put a stitch on either side of each light on the string.

Congratulations! You have completed your dog outfit!
