Lightweight Shelter

One of the most valuable skills I have learned in the Army is how to construct this lightweight shelter commonly referred to as a hooch. With a poncho, cord and a little imagination you too can enjoy the transient lifestyle of a US Army Infantryman.

Materials Needed:

KIMG0030.JPG

Military style poncho or tarp, can be found online or at surplus stores

Parachute cord: any kind of strong cord will work

Bungee Cords (optional)

4 Tent stakes (optional)

Stuff sack, should be large enough to fit poncho and other items (optional)

Note: You should be able to make due with just a poncho and some cord, extras such as tent stakes and bungee cords make hooch construction a lot easier but are not necessary.

Build It

Hooch building is about adapting to your environment with the tools you have on hand. Get creative, you can use trees, rocks, vehicles or just about anything you want. A good hooch should be able to keep you dry and warm, here are some tips I have leaned:

Make sure to tie the hood of the poncho closed, you don't want a big hole in the middle of your shelter.

Make sure the poncho is tight, water should be able to easily run down the sides.

You can change the height of a hooch to adjust airflow, on warmer nights a high hooch can offer better airflow.

Tent stakes and bungee cords can be used to secure corners.

If in areas of heavy rainfall dig a ditch underneath the edges of the poncho to divert water.

Enjoy Your New Vagrant Lifestyle

Thanks for reading and remember: wherever you go always bring a poncho.
