Supplies
- Filament for the box, in whatever color you'd like
- White filament for the lithophane
- 5V white LED strip lights (roughly 40cm needed)
- MP3 player board
- Push button switch
- 3 AAA battery holder with switch 4.5V
- Any size micro SD card
- 3 AAA batteries
- .stl file for the lithophane box, from here
Create the Lithophane
Go to this website: https://lithophanemaker.com/Framed%20Lithophane.html
Upload the photo you'd like to use. Make sure to change these two settings:
- Depth should be 3mm
- Base Height should be 5mm
All the other settings should be correct by default.
Feel free to crop your picture to your liking. Then enter your email and click "Create .stl"
The file will start downloading immediately.
3D Print the Lithophane
Extract the zip file that was just downloaded from the Lithophane maker website. Import that .stl into your slicer of choice. I will be using Bambu Studio.
My suggested printing settings:
- Print the lithophane vertically (this one is essential)
- Use 100% infill density
- Change order of walls to outer/inner
- For layer height, I've found 0.2mm works well. If you want even higher quality you can go down to 0.08mm, but I'm not sure it improves the final product very much.
Then go ahead and print the lithophane!
3D Print the Lithophane Box
Buy the .stl file for the box here!
Import the .stl file for the lithophane box into your slicer. You will need supports, you can see my suggested settings for Bambu Studio in the attached screenshot. I recommend that you do not overdo the supports, since they can be a pain to remove, especially on the inside of the box. Tree supports are much easier to remove than standard supports.
Insert Battery Pack
Add your AAA batteries to the battery pack. Feed the battery pack wires through the small hole in the back of the Lithobox. There are 2 holes back there, one is for the battery pack's switch, the other is for the wires. Make sure to feed through the correct hole.
Clarification: in the photo, you'll see that the speaker is already in place. You don't need to do that yet, I am just using a completed Lithobox to make this tutorial, so I don't want to completely disassemble it.
Insert Button in the Top of the Box
Insert the switch button into the hole in the top of the box, then screw the nut (that comes with the button) onto the button on the inside of the box.
Place the Components Inside
Connect the wires from the speaker to the screw terminal on the MP3 player board (red to SP+ and black to SP-). Press the speaker into its slot, the MP3 board into its slot.
Cut the LEDs down to the length you want. Remove the adhesive backing on the LEDs and mount them around the perimeter of the inside of the box.
Soldering
Now you need to solder all the wires together as follows:
- Solder the black wire from the battery pack to the black wire of the switch button.
- Solder the red wire of the switch button to the BAT- pad on the MP3 player board.
- Solder the red wire from the battery pack to the BAT+ pad on the MP3 player board.
- Solder the red wire of the LEDs to the BAT+ pad on the MP3 player board.
- Solder the black wire of the LEDs to the BAT- pad on the MP3 player board.
This will turn on the MP3 board and the LEDs when the button is pressed.
Add an MP3 File to Your SD Card
Add one or more MP3 files to a micro SD card, then insert the SD card into the MP3 player board. Now when you turn on the Lithobox, music will start playing!
