MINECRAFT-Inspired Light-Up LED Torch
We love Paper Circuits and yes, we still love MINECRAFT! We've created templates for these torches as well as six other Minecraft-Inspired projects! We've included a PDF eBook with all the files.
If you are brand new to building paper circuits check out our guide to Getting Started with Paper Circuits to learn the basics.
Supplies
Brown Dog Gadgets sells kits and supplies, but you don't need to buy anything from us to create paper circuits. (Though if you do it does help support us in creating new projects and resources for teacher and students.)
The easiest way to get all of the parts you need is to pick up a Paper Circuits Kit, but if you've already got some conductive tape, coin cell batteries, and LEDs, you can make those supplies work as well.
You will need:
- PDF Templates (Included!)
- Paper
- 10mm Jumbo LEDs
- Maker Tape (1/4" Wide)
- CR2032 Battery
Note: We are using Maker Tape (a nylon tape that is conductive on the top, bottom, and all the way through) because it's the easiest tape to work with when creating paper circuits. Other conductive tapes (copper foil, etc.) are often only conductive on the top surface, so they will not work for some of these techniques, including the "Tape Loop" we use to connect the battery.
Print the Templates
- We've included a PDF file with templates for these torches as well as six other Minecraft-Inspired projects!
- Each project is meant to be printed double-sided so you can build the circuit on the inside and see the art on the outside.
- You'll also find black & white versions that you can color yourself.
Cut the Templates
- After you print the templates you'll need to cut them.
- Always cut on the outside just in case your printer doesn't line things up perfectly.
- If the inside is not perfectly aligned, that's okay! Just use it as a rough guide.
- Tip: If you can't print double-sided easily just print out each page separately and use the diagram for reference when you build your circuit.
Fold Templates
- Fold each piece as indicated using the lines on the outside as a guide.
Build the Circuit
- Grab your CR2032 Battery, a White Jumbo 10mm LED, and some Maker Tape...
- Build your circuit as shown on template you printed out.
- Note that we'll use a "Tape Loop" (a small loop of Maker Tape) beneath the battery to stick it down.
- Maker Tape is conductive all the way through so it can secure our battery and allow current to flow. (Most copper tapes is not conductive on both sides so a tape loop will not work.)
Assemble Pieces
- Once you've got your circuit working you can assemble each piece.
- Fold the edges together and use tape to attach them.
- Once you've got both pieces assembled you can stick them together!
Enjoy Your Torch!
- You've now got a Light-up MINECRAFT-Inspired Torch!
- Have Fun!
Check Out the Other Projects
- If you've already downloaded the PDF you may have seen the other project templates.
- Try building these as well. (The assembly techniques are all pretty similar.)
- A few of them use a vibrating motor instead of an LED and will move around instead of lighting up!
