HALLOWEEN MUMMY DIGITAL DRAWING/PAINTING WITH SKETCHBOOK 6.

INSTRUCT 19.JPG
HERE IS MY HALLOWEEN INSTRUCTABLE. I USED A FREE TRIAL OF SKETCHBOOK 6 WHICH ENDED THE DAY I FINISHED THIS PROJECT. I STILL HAVE SKETCHBOOK EXPRESS BUT NOW I FEEL LIMITED. LOOKS LIKE IT'S TIME TO UPGRADE. I HOPE YOU ENJOY DRAWING IT AS MUCH AS I DID. I DID NOT DO THIS INSTRUCTABLE SO THAT YOURS WOULD LOOK EXACTLY LIKE MINE, I LEFT SOME ROOM FOR YOU TO MAKE IT YOUR OWN. HAVE FUN I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HOW THEY COME OUT.

START

INSTRUCT 1.JPG
TO DRAW AND COLOR A MUMMY YOU MUST START WITH A BLANK PAGE.
THIS IS THE BACKGROUND LAYER THAT WILL SIT BELOW ALL THE OTHER LAYERS.
IT DOESN'T NEED TO HAVE THE ACTUAL BACKGROUND OF YOUR DRAWING ON IT
BECAUSE YOU CAN ARRANGE YOUR LAYERS IN THE LAYER WINDOW LATER.

HORIZON LINE

INSTRUCT 2.JPG
THE HORIZON LINE IS NOT CRUCIAL FOR THIS PARTICULAR DRAWING.
ALTHOUGH A STARTING POINT IS PRICELESS.
USE A LIGHT COLOR OR ADJUST THE OPACITY IN THE BRUSH WINDOW.
WHICH IS IN THE UPPER LEFT OF MY SCREEN NEXT TO THE TOOLS.

STRUCTURE

INSTRUCT 3.JPG
UNLESS FREEHAND IS YOUR THING I WOULD USE
THE RECTANGLE AND/OR ELIPSE DRAWING TOOLS.
USE THE SHAPES TO FORM YOUR BASIC CONCEPT.
IN THIS CASE IT WILL BE A MUMMY. TO USE THE TOOL JUST
CLICK & HOLD, DRAG TO THE DESIRED SIZE AND RELEASE.
DETAILS SHOULD BE THE LAST THING ON YOUR MIND RIGHT NOW.

LIGHT DETAIL

INSTRUCT 4.JPG
NOW SOME LIGHT DETAILS OR SKETCHING.
ONCE AGAIN A LIGHT COLOR OR LOW OPACITY WILL BE ALL YOU NEED HERE.
THIS IS GOING TO BE JUST A GUIDE FOR THE ACTUAL .
SO IT IS A GOOD TIME TO START A NEW LAYER.
IN THE LAYERS WINDOW CLICK THE + IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER.
THIS WILL BE LAYER 1.

FORMING OUTER LINE

INSTRUCT 5.JPG
NOW THAT YOU HAVE MADE A NEW LAYER...
WHICH SHOULD BE LAYER 1.
USE A  SLIGHTLY DARKER COLOR AND
SWITCH TO A PEN OR BRUSH TOOL
( IF YOU STARTED WITH THE PENCIL)
AND DRAW THE OUTER MOST OUTLINE.
KEEP IN MIND THAT BECAUSE THE HANDS SHOULD
BE OUT IN FRONT THEY WILL GET A BOLD OUTLINE AS WELL.

DETAIL

INSTRUCT 6.JPG
NOW LETS ADD SOME DEFINITION TO THOSE BANDAGES.
USING THE SAME TOOL AS THE LAST STEP IS GONNA BE FINE
BECAUSE ITS NEW LAYER TIME.
THESE LINES CAN STILL BE A LITTLE SKETCHY BECAUSE
THE FINAL LINE SCULPTING WILL HAPPEN LATER.

IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY YOU CAN DELETE, LOWER THE OPACITY
OR EVEN MAKE LAYER 1 INVISIBLE NOW. YOU CAN DO ALL OF THIS
IN THE LAYERS WINDOW.

LINE SCULPTING

INSTRUCT 7.JPG
ON THE NEW LAYER...
WHICH WILL BE LAYER 2
USE A BOLDER BRUSH AND TRACE THE OUTER MOST LINES AGAIN.
DON"T FORGET THE HANDS AND LEFT FOOT.
ONCE YOUR HAPPY YOU CAN MAKE A NEW LAYER.

BOLD

INSTRUCT 8.JPG
YOU CAN MERGE LAYERS 1 AND 2 IN THE LAYERS WINDOW IF YOU LIKE.
ON LAYER 3 YOU SHOULD NOW USE BLACK AND
USE A BOLDER BRUSH AND TRACE THE OUTER MOST LINES AGAIN.
KEEP LAYER 3 SEPARATE FROM 1 ND 2 FOR NOW.

BOLDER

INSTRUCT 9.JPG
START TO PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE ALMOST FINISHED LINES NOW.
ZOOM IN, CLEAN THEM UP, USE THE ERASER AS WELL AS SCULPTING WITH
A BRUSH OR A PEN TOOL. A NEW LAYER COULDN'T HURT FOR THE NEXT STEP.

BOLDEST

INSTRUCT 10.JPG
NOW FINISH THOSE BANDAGES WITH THE SAME BLACK JUST GO BACK TO A SMALLER BRUSH.
YOU SHOULD NO LONGER NEED LAYERS 1 AND 2 (THAT YOU MERGED TOGETHER) SO DELETE OR MAKE THEM INVISIBLE.
NOW MERGE 3 AND 4 SO THAT ALL YOUR DARK BLACK LINE WORK IS ON ONE LAYER.

SKY

INSTRUCT 11.JPG
ON A NEW LAYER WHICH I PLACE BEHIND THE LAYER WITH YOUR BLACK LINE WORK
YOU CAN USE A HUGE BRUSH AND COLOR EVERYTHING ABOVE YOUR HORIZON LINE DARK GREY.

INSTRUCT 12.JPG
BELOW YOUR HORIZON LINE ON THE SAME LAYER AS THE GREY SKY YOU WILL
SWITCH TO A SAND OR TAN COLOR AND FILL IN THE LOWER HALF ONLY.
DELETE THE LAYER WITH YOUR HORIZON LINE NOW.

GLOW

INSTRUCT 13.JPG
EITHER ON THE SAME LAYER THAT HAS THE SKY AND SAND
OR ON A NEW ONE ABOVE IT AND BELOW THE LINE WORK
START ADDING SOME GLOW AND HIGHLIGHTS. STILL USING A BIG BRUSH
CHANGE THE OPACITY TO A VERY LOW SETTING LIKE 10 % OR LESS. CHOOSE A NICE VERY LIGHT GREEN
AND COLOR AROUND THE EDGES OF THE MUMMY BLEEDING OUT PAST THE LINE WORK.
DONT WORRY ABOUT GETTING THE GLOW INSIDE THE MUMMY HE WILL GET COLOR LATER
ON A LAYER THAT SITS ABOVE THIS ONE BUT STILL UNDER THE LINE WORK LAYER WHICH
IS GOING TO BE ON TOP FROM NOW ON.

SHADOW

INSTRUCT 14.JPG
NOW ADD SOME SHADOWS BELOW THE MUMMY EXACTLY LIKE YOU DID THE GLOW
JUST USE A DARK BROWN INSTEAD. KEEP THE OPACITY LOW. WHEN USEING LOW OPACITY YOU CAN MAKE YOUR COLOR BRIGHTER, BOLDER, DEEPER  ETC WHENEVER YOU OVER LAP THE SAME COLOR OR GET A SUBTLE TRANSITION BETWEEN COLORS. UNLIKE SOLID OPAQUE (HIGH OPACITY) COLOR THAT COVER EVERY COLOR BELOW IT.

STARS AND ROCKS

INSTRUCT 15.JPG
NOW ADD SOME STARS AND GRAVEL TYPE ROCKS. SWITCH YOUR BRUSH TO
A SMALL OPAQUE WHITE FOR THE STARS AND A MEDIUM OPACITY
ASSORTMENT OF GREY AND TAN FOR THE ROCKS

BANDAGES

INSTRUCT 16.JPG
NEW LAYER TIME.
MAKE SURE THE NEW LAYER IS ABOVE YOUR CURRENT BACKGROUND LAYER
WHICH IS THE ONE YOU WERE JUST WORKING ON. PICK A NICE BANDAGE COLOR
AND COLOR WITHIN THE LINES OF THE ENTIRE MUMMY. EXCEPT FOR THE EYES.

SHADOW

INSTRUCT 17.JPG
SWITCH TO A LIGHTLY DARKER COLOR AND PLAY WITH THE OPACITY IF YOU WANT AND DO SOME SHADING.
YOU ARE CREATING A SUBTLE SHADOW EFFECT BY USING A SIMILAR BUT DARKER COLOR INSTEAD OF BLACK OR GREY.
DON'T OVER DO IT, BELOW THE HEAD AND HANDS WILL ADD DEPTH.

HIGHLIGHT

INSTRUCT 18.JPG
NOW USING THE SAME GREENISH COLOR FROM THE GLOW ADD A LIGHT SOURCE OR HIGHLIGHT JUST LIKE THE SHADING YOU JUST DID WITH THE TAN. YOU WILL BE ADDING IT IN THE AREAS THAT YOU DIDN'T USE THE TAN AND DON'T OVER DO IT.
YOU SHOULD STILL SEE SOME OF THE ORIGINAL BANDAGE COLOR THOUGH OUT THE MUMMY. IF YOU ARE LIKE ME OVER DOING COLOR AND STUFF COMES NATURALLY SO HERE'S A TIP:
IF YOU USE A NEW LAYER FOR EACH STEP YOU CAN ADJUST THE OPACITY FOR EACH ONE INDIVIDUALLY.

FINAL

INSTRUCT 19.JPG
NOW JUST A BIT OF THAT BLACK, GREY OR DARK COLOR SHADING (LOW OPACITY) AND SOME COLOR IN THE EYES AND WE HAVE OURSELVES A MUMMY. MAKE SURE YOUR OUTLINE LAYER IS ABOVE THE LAYER THAT HAS THE COLORING FOR THE MUMMY. AND THAT SCREEN IS ABOVE THE ONE WITH THE BACKGROUND AND MERGE THEM ALL TOGETHER IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO. OR YOU CAN TRY PLAYING AROUND WITH THE LAYER ORDER , OPACITY AND VISIBILITY FOR SOME UNPLANNED VERSIONS OF YOUR CREATION. JUST MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR FINISHED VERSION FIRST.

ALSO THROUGH OUT YOUR PROJECT ALWAYS SAVE, SAVE, SAVE, CTRL S, APPLE S ETC.
