Mad Eye Moody's Servo Eye

MadEyeMoody.jpg.jpg

In this guide well look at how to make a moving replica of Mad Eye Moody's eye from Harry Potter.

What you'll need:

  • Access to a 3D printer
  • Blue and Black paint
  • Arduino pro-Micro or similar size arduino
  • Servo motor
  • A skinny belt
  • Glue
  • Tape

3D Print and Paint

You'll first need to 3D print the parts that make up the eye itself.

You can find the original upload her: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1761058

or in the .zip file below.

There are 2 separate pieces for the base that need to be glued together in a specific orientation to line up the crack.

You then need to paint the pupil and give the base a finish.

Servo

Solder the wires for the Servo motor to the arduino as shown in the picture and upload the code to the arduino. The code will wait for 2-12 seconds and move the servo to a position 70-90 degrees.

The 3D printed surfaces will have very high friction and don't glide easily. So you might need to put tape on the inside of the base to let the eye glide.

Putting It All Toghether

When the eye is painted, the base parts glued together and the servo soldered to the arduino, you're ready to connect it all together.

You first need to fit the servo in the slot in the eye, you might need to sand down the slot to fit even a very small servo.

Then you need to connect the servo attachment to the larger of the cylinders on the inside of base.

Then connect the skinny belt to the small handles on the base.

Pull the wires for the servo along the strap (tape when necessary) and tape the arduino to the strap over where your ear will be.

You can now connect the arduino to a rechargeable battery pack to make it move while wearing it.
