Mad Max: Max's Costume

With the upcoming release of "Mad Max: Fury Road", I figured that now would be a good time to make the costume of the series title character: "Mad" Max Rockatansky. This costume is for a series of videos I am posting on YouTube reviewing the entire "Mad Max Trilogy". The costume is going to be the costume from the first movie. I will also be making the costume from "The Road Warrior", but that will be a different Instructable all together. So, lets see how I made Mad Max: Max's Costume!

The first thing I needed to do was buy a leather jacket that looked close to the one worn by Max in the movie. With a limited budget, I knew it needed to be cheap. I eventually found a Indiana Jones: Mutt costume for about $10 on amazon. Also, let me say that I think that the product image is the most accidentally hilarious product image ever! Once it came in the mail, I realized I needed to get rid of the white writing on the collar and shoulder. I first used a sharpie to get rid of the "Mutt" on the shoulder. I then put a piece of silver tape on it to to cover up most of it. Max has a badge in this place, and it is a perfect way to hide most of it. I painted "MFP 4073" (Max's badge number) on it. The sharpie did not work, so I ended up painting it with black paint. That worked better, so I painted the collar with it too.

Because I knew I was going to be using this coat for the "Road Warrior" jacket, I didn't want to poke holes in it with a pin on badge. I bought a set of costume sheriff badges for about $1.50. I took one and decided that I was going to use a magnet to put it on the coat. I took a small magnet and superglued it onto the back. To put it on the jacket, I put one magnet on one side and the badge on the other, this allowed it to be put on the jacket without any holes!

Easiest task. Buy gloves, cut off fingers on the right glove. Congrats, you're done.

For the gun holster, I took two water bottles and cut the tops and bottoms off. I then cut them to fit around the Sawed-Off Shotgun I made (Which I did not document). I wrapped the entire thing with painters tape to hold it in good. I added a bottom to make sure that the gun didn't fall out. I took a piece of cardboard and measured it to reach from my belt line to my leg. I taped it onto the holster. I added slits for a belt and painted it black.

Because I was going to use this jacket for the "Road Warrior" jacket too, I didn't want to add permanent shoulder pads. I found a pair of knee pads that looked close enough to what I was looking for. I just slide them up and wear them on my shoulder.

EDIT: I found a pair of shoulder pads that looked better than the ones I wear in the rest of the pictures. Will update pictures when video is done.

Now put on some black pants and boots. It is all done! In these pictures you may notice I don't gave the boots or holster on. That's because I don't have a belt that fits me right now.
