Magic Wool How To: Make a Fluffy Easter Bunny

This is an easy way to make lovely fluffy Easter bunnies. I've made these bunnies hundreds of times with children – even with those with no experience of wool and felting – and they always look great!

To make your fluffy Easter bunny, you'll need:

* White, brown, beige, green or black wool roving

* Strong cotton yarn

* Cardboard

* Compass

* Scissors

Draw two circles on the cardboard, each with a larger outer circle of 6 cm (3 in) and a smaller inner circumference of 2½–3 cm (1–1½ in). Cut them out with scissors. Place the cardboard rings on top of each other – this is the template for your pompom.

Take a length of roving and wind around the cardboard rings. Repeat this process until the inner hole is very small.

Now cut the wool around the outer edge of the rings.

Take a double length of cotton yarn and wrap it between the cardboard rings. Pull together as tightly as possible and knot the ends. Remove the cardboard rings (if necessary, cut them so you can pull them out). You will have a fluffy pompom. Cut the threads hanging out. Trim the ball into an egg shape with scissors.

Felt a ridge right around one end to make the head. To make the rabbit ears, felt a piece of wool about 10 cm (4 in) long to the centre of the head – and the Easter bunny is finished!

Once you've perfected your magic wool techniques, why not try felting bunnies in different sizes? You can use a larger cardboard circle to make larger bunnies. For example, try an 8 cm (3 in) outer circumference and 4 cm (1½ in) circumference for the inner circle.
