Made out of a heavy steel base, wood, magnets. This will prevent you from banging your iron tips onto spring based iron stand thus prolonging tip life.

It is believed that iron tips age quicker if their plating has microcracks in them. These cracks are fourmed because the tips often hit the stand while we put the iron ,in and out of their place.

Sorry.I won't be going into too much details of how I made it.I'm pretty sure someone will come along and look at this and make a better instructable ;-)

How Strong Are the Magnets I Used?

Just strong enough to hold the weights of tipical soldering iron.

the base belongs to a spring based iron stand that I disliked. (it was given to me for free btw.)

So i unscrewed the spring,

made a wooden post (this involved lots of filing and sawing),

drilled holes a little deeper than whats required for the magnets but just wide enough for press fit

filled it with sawdust -glue mix (yes I keep a salt container filled with fine sawdust)

pressed manets into the holes using wooden clamp (so that the magnets don't stick to the clamp.) screwed the post to the base and vola!
