In this instructable I'm going to show you how to make magnetic rocks. Using cement, water, a little plumbers putty and an old speaker magnet. Then to make them extra durable we will coat them and maybe even paint a few.

Supplies

  • Mortar type N.
  • Plumbers Putty
  • Water
  • Magnets
  • Top Coat Spray Enamel
  • Spray Paint (any color you like)

Any Magnet Will Do.

I found this old magnet that was once part of a speaker. You can buy magnets if you prefer. but i find its easiest to get that real rock shape from these old magnets. Once you break them of course.

Breaking the Magnet

Place you magnet in a thick zip lock bag. Grab an old towel or flannel. Wrap up the zip lock grab a hammer and smash to desired size. Remove from the bag. Pick apart the pieces and select your desired size. You want to try and remopve as much magnet dust from your selected peices as possible. I just use a cloth but I hear duct tape works well also.

Mixing Mortar for Magnets

I used 10 parts mortar, 2 part plumbers putty and a small amount of water. You can always add more water. Removing it is a different story. Your looking for a nice oatmeal consistency.

Coating the Magnets

I used a screw driver to dip each magnet in the mortar mix. I let the excess run off then dip again. Its handy to have some chops sticks around to push the magnet off onto a drying plate when your done. If you happen to smudge a little off use the stick to place a little back on. Once 6you have coated all the magnets let them dry for 24 hours.

Clear Coating.

You will now have magnetic stones. They are a bit brittle so I used a spray can of hard top covering to keep them from chipping. I hung them from a metal Socket Holder to dry. You can also paint them if you would like.
