Make a Multi-Coloured Rock Lamp

Have you ever come back home from a long, miserable exhausting day, like a shopping trip or maybe you had a bad day at the offices? With this multi use relaxing device, it can help you relax, or even help you get to sleep. It is composed of a circuit that plays a relaxing white noise, and the ambient glowing rocks. Glowing rocks have been scientifically proven to lighten your bad mood, as they have a very ambient and warm feel. Perfect for those dark, winter days!

For this project you are going to need:
Recycled wood
Nails
Hammer
Sandpaper
Led lights
An electronics kit or some components needed for step 3
Some semi transparent material
Transparent rocks/stones
Glue gun

Things you could find useful:
Vice
Drill

First of all you will need to get some of your recycled wood, and make a simple box out of it. It doesn't matter too much what size it is, but it depends on how many rocks you have. If you prefer, you could pre dill some holes and then put the nails in them. It's best to use small, wood nails. Once you have done that, you need to drill some large holes, as shown in the picture. 6 for the speaker, and one for the wires.

For this step you will need to get some kind of electronics kit or hopefully you have the means to make your own using basic components. I was lucky and found an old electronics kit, which is designed for teaching kids about electronics. Make sure it has some kind of white noise programmed into it. Next connect all the components together, as shown in the picture. If you want, you don't have to make this sound circuit, but I think it adds a cool effect. What is basically is, is a speaker connected to a few batteries and a switch, with a pre programmed chip. I had to wire the switch from underneath the box to the circuit, otherwise it wouldn't fit. Once you have done that, you may want to put a piece of cardboard or wood over to stop the lights from overheating.

For the lights I used some christmas led lights for cheap. If you wanted, you could make an led strip that actually changes colour, but I didn't have the time to make this. Once you fit in the lights, glue them down a bit to stop them from moving. Then put the small square of semi transparent sheet over the lights, so the rocks don't physically touch the LEDs. Glue this to the wood.

Next all you need to do is add the transparent rocks. They are called Himalayan salt rocks, but you could probably use some other kind if you don't have them. It is almost finished!

To add a more friendly/cosy look to it, you could go ahead and varnish or paint the wood, but this is up to you and I didn't have time for this.
