Make It Small X 3
I turned a boring office, into a room with 3 different uses. The 3 zones in the room are an office, workout, and a vinyl record listening zone.
Supplies
In general, this project was constructed/designed with the use of Autodesk Revit 2025.
Problem Statement
My dad’s office/workout room for the family in the basement is very basic. I want this room to enhance the house, with a better space to workout and more sophisticated office. I also am a vinyl collector and would like to have a better set up for listening. So, I chose this room for the Make It Small challenge.
Precedence/Inspiration
I wanted to upgrade the home gym while keeping a sophisticated office, and here are the photos I used as reference to my ideas. To incorporate the vinyl listening corner, I made sure to see what was necessary to have a vinyl record player. I also learned that it is important that vinyl's are stored in a tight upright position on an open shelf.
Sketching My Ideas
Before I went into Revit to create my design, I sketched out my ideas to get a basic visual in front of me. I used the pre-existing floor plan as a basis to create multiple plans. Then I created a few 3-D sketches to really visualize the spaces. I finally decided on a final draft floor plan (highlighted yellow) and labeled it for easy reference once I got to Revit.
Floor Plans
In Revit the first thing I did was create the floor plans, according to my sketches. I made sure that there was enough walking space to get to the workout zone without disrupting the office zone. I also added speakers into the ceiling that the record player would be connected to for surround sound and better quality listening.
Perspective
Here's a top view of the whole room.
Rendering the Office Zone
After completing all of the building in Revit, I rendered each zone, starting with the office zone.
Rendering the Listening/vinyl Zone
Once the office rendering was completed, I went onto rendering the listening/vinyl zone. Including a view from the listening seat.
Rendering the Workout Zone
Finally, I went onto rendering a view of the workout area. I included a view from the treadmill as well.
Cross Section
I also wanted to add another perspective to help viewers fully understand the layout, so I went with including a cross section of the room.
How It Would Be Done
Currently, the space is occupied by a desk, tv, treadmill, and elliptical in a haphazardly way. The plan is to create zones within the larger space. Zones would include a workout, office, and listening area. To get the exact rendered design, a custom contractor would come in to do it. Otherwise, it can be achieved by ordering similar items. Ordering similar items also would help keep the cost down.
To also keep the prices down, the treadmill and elliptical will be moved into their specific zone. While the TV would be moved onto an office zone wall.

Reflection
I realized that with a few sketches and ideas, a small room can be created into something with so many uses. This room could be changed into a variety of things with buying different furniture. In the end, the office/workout/listening room is the most beneficial for my family. With a few pieces of furniture and rearranging them, a once unpleasing room to look at will enhance the value of my house in so many ways!
