Make a Hologram Viewer for Sun to Moon Sleep Clock

This instructable will show you how to make an iPad/tablet hologram viewer for my app, Sun to Moon Sleep Clock.

Before you start this project you will need to make the accompanying iPad stand which will be used as the base of the viewer. The Instructable for this can be found here.

All templates needed for the hologram viewer are included with the stand templates which can be downloaded at www.msibley.com/sleep-clock-stand. Templates are available for iPads (Gen 1-4, Air 1-2, Pro 9.7 & Mini) and Amazon Fire tablets (HD6, 7, HD 8 & HD10).

Sun to Moon Sleep Clock is available for iOS, Android and Amazon devices.

You will need...

• All templates printed at actual size onto A4 inkjet paper
• Corrugated cardboard large enough to fit the combined templates (rigid cardboard with a thickness of 2mm or less is best)
• PVA glue and a paint brush to apply
• 5 heavy books for keeping it flat whilst drying and some scrap paper
• Sharp scissors
• A sharp craft knife
• A metal ruler
• A glue gun (tape will work but a glue gun creates a neater result)
• Masking tape or Sellotape
• Velcro pads
• A4 Acetate sheet - A thickness of 240 microns seems to offer the best compromise between rigidity and ghosting

Lay out your templates on the cardboard then trim along any of the template edges that meet. Draw roughly around the outer edge of the combined templates so that you will know where to apply the glue to the cardboard.

Remove the templates and cover the exposed area with a thin layer of PVA glue. It is best to apply the glue to the cardboard rather than the paper, to avoid it stretching and tearing with the moisture.

Place the templates back onto the gluey surface, being careful to match up the patterns and registration marks.

Rub over the entire surface with a soft cloth to ensure a good bond, then cover with a layer of scrap paper and heavy books. I recommend leaving it to dry for at least 24 hours (possibly longer in cold climates) as it is hard to make clean cuts if the glue is still damp.

Remove the books and scrap paper then cut out your template (including the aperture) with a sharp craft knife and metal ruler. You will also need to cut out the shooting star.

Cut your acetate sheet to a size just larger than the aperture of your viewer then stretch it across the undecorated side and tape it in place. It is important that the acetate is as taut as possible to ensure the reflected image is not distorted.

Turn over your viewer and make a valley fold along the chevrons using a sharp implement such as a paint scraper to first create a crease. Make a mountain fold along the star line at the top and fold the tab slightly, ready for the shooting star.

Apply velcro tabs to both the base and hologram viewer to secure it in place. If you do not wish to damage the base/stand with sticky tabs then you may want to use a less permanent method such as blue tack or even just leave the hologram viewer free-standing.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the star to the tab at the top of the viewer.

Open up Sun to Moon Sleep Clock and select 'Hologram mode' from the settings before placing it in the viewer and turning out all the lights.
