Make an Oven Mitt From Scraps

What you need for this:

Ideally a material similar to sheepskin - lined on the one side

Scissors

Marking pen

Sewing machine/Needle and thread

A year or so ago, I was given a sheepskin gilet that was too big for me. So I measured and trimmed the fabric so it would fit and quite a lot left over.

This fabric is ideal for an oven mitt because it is thick and already padded so there is no need to do that inner quilting that you find in oven mitts.

So try to find a fabric like this if you can because it makes this entire process WAAAAY easier.

This type of fabric also doesn't need a hem in it so it saves you a lot of time

Like I said, mind was originally from a garment so it actually already had a hem in it.

I flipped the fabric inside out and made sure to line up the hemmed side along one side of my hand

Then using a highlighter, I measured out the general "mitten"shape of the glove

Make sure that is it larger than your hand because you don't want to sew it and have it end up being small

Just by a few centimeters

As easy as that.

Cut it out and trim off any loose ends

Pull away any loose fibers because like I say, this doesn't need a hem but cutting will cause some pieces to fall off

I initially tried on my sewing machine but the fabric was a little to thick so I opted instead to do it by hand

Make sure your stitches are tight with double thread if you are going to do it by hand.

Once your sewing is done, you can flip it to be the right way around

Use your fingers to push out any bits that may need coaxing

And there you have it - a simple oven mitt
