Makedo Xylophone

Today we started by playing with the cardboard tubes we’ve been gathering - foil tubes, cling wrap tubes, toilet paper tubes, postal tubes, paper towel tubes. Each varied in size and thickness so we lined them up and all of a sudden, what was previously packaging waste now turned into a musical instrument – a xylophone.

For this project you will need a fruit box, paper tubes, elestic bands and Makedo Re-pins and Reclips. To begin, cut your paper tubes to descending lengths using the Makedo Safe-saw.

We have sourced different sized paper tubes such as a postal tube and a paper towel tubes. You can also use just a simple household paper towel tube cut at different lengths to make this Xylophone.

Use the point end of the Makedo saw and punch  two holes on the paper tubes. These holes will be where you connect it to the box base.

For the base of the Xylophone, punch two holes on either side of the box.

Connect two Makedo Re-pins and Re-clips to the already punched holes. This will hold the elastic to make the Xylophone bridge for the tubes.

Use the elastic bands and stretch them from one side of the box to the other and secure it over the Makedo Re-pins. If your elastic bands are not long enough, lengthen it by adding another elastic and Makedo Re-pin and Re-clip as shown in the image.

Place a Makedo Re-pin to the holes of the tubes and connect it to the elastic bridge with a Re-clip. Place the tubes in Descending order and ensure there is spacing between each tube.
