Maker Pathway: Tie Fleece Blanket

Ever get cold on those freezing Michigan winter nights? Well have no fear, because the tie fleece blanket is here! With the ability to mix and match your favorite patterns, it can be both a fun project and something warm to curl up in.

Getting the Materials

The materials needed for this project are relatively easy to come by. You need a ruler, a pair of scissors, and two sections of fleece that are the same size, with the most used size around 2.5 yards by 1 yard. Depending on who you are making the blanket for, you can make it longer or shorter to suit your needs.

Position of the Fleece

Before doing anything else, make sure the trademark fabric or company label is cut off from the fabric to have proper placing of the fleece later on. Then, place one of the pieces of fleece over the other so they match up as completely as possible.

Cutting the Corners

Cut a 4 inch by 4 inch square piece from each corner of the stacked material. There will be a total of eight scrap pieces after cutting the corners.

Cutting the Frills

This next part is the hardest and most time consuming component. Along each of the four sides, cut a 1 inch wide by 4 inch (the length of the squares cut from the corner) long strip. Make sure the strip stays attached to the rest of the material, otherwise you will not be able to complete the next task.

Tying the Strips of Fabric

Using the cut material from both of the pieces of fabric, tie the front and back piece together in a double knot. Make sure to not tie it too loose or too tight, but just secure enough to where it will not come undone.

Finish Your Product!

After all four sides have been tied, double check to make sure all the pieces of fabric have been tied together. When you are sure everything is tied together an secure, enjoy the blanket! Give it to a friend, someone in the family, or just enjoy it for yourself!
