Making a Car in OnShape
In this instructable I am going to show you how to make a car in the OnShape CAD system as show in the pictures above.
Open a New Document
first you new to open a new document if haven't already and you should now see the grid like the one in the picture shown
Create Your Part Studios
now you can start making you part studios, you will need 5. Now name them
- Axle
- Base or body
- Wheels
- and Rear view mirrors
these will all come together in the assembly tab later in the project.
Start to Sketch
Now we can start to sketch or car's body
first you need to select the sketch icon and now select the front plane to draw on
The Sketch
now that we have our sketch ready we need to know how it should look
I used a pencil and paper to draw my design, And it became what you saw at the top of the project title
first lets do the bottom, draw using the picture above as a reference with places for the wheels using arcs and connecting them both with lines.
Sketch the Rest of the Body
now we can sketch the rest of the body which is very simple, just use the picture above.
Extrude the Body
now we can make our sketch in 3D, just extrude the sketch like I did in the pictures above.
Making the Side Windows
to make the side windows we need to make a new sketch ,first chose one side of the car and then sketch the window in your preference. after that then end the sketch and choose the fillet icon. now choose the sketch lines and then end, now it should look like mine. repeat for the other side.
Making Edges Look Better on Sides
now do what you did in the last step to the side just don't make a new sketch.
Grill
to make the grill start a new sketch on the area where you would have your grill then make a rectangle and extrude it out by 0.06 inches. we aren't really able to do this much detail because I have not been able to make a good grill pattern appear without taking out giant chucks out of it.
if you know how please tell me so I can tell everyone else how to. I will give you credit for it in the last step
Head Lights
to make the head lights select the front of the car again and make two simple circles and extrude them. to make them the same distance you can mirror them. to mirror create a line in the very center ,select mirror and their will be instructions that OnShape gives from there.
The Tires and Axle (Part 1)
first we need to find the dimensions of the place the wheels and axles will go. so we will make a new sketch on the bottom and sides to find the exact measurements for our parts. these are my dimensions shown in the pictures above , now I can use this to make our parts. you can get yours by selecting the icon i the toolbar that looks like the dimensions lines and arrows.
Axle and Wheels (Part 2)
now we need to find the diameter of the wheels, just repeat the last step on the side of the car
Making the Wheels and Axles
now we just use the measurements to make the part mine might look different than yours and that is ok.
The Rear View Mirrors
Now the mirrors, go to the mirrors tab. now you can make a new sketch like I did and then extrude the connection piece and mirrors separably to make them different size for more detail. now go back to the sketch and mirror it. doing the same things to that mirror.
Assemble the Axle and Wheels
now that we have all of our parts we can now start to make the final product. but first we need to assemble the axle and wheels (Only make one, You will see why later). Just simply make a new assembly and then import both the parts and fix them together. make sure to have each wheel and the very end of the axle but still connected to it.
Final Assembly
Good Job! you have made it to the last step in the process of making the car, The Assembly.
First insert all of the parts you have made but for the wheels and axle, import ONLY the assembly but do it twice as well with the mirror.
Now just connect them using the help of the triad manipulator to move them
DONE
now you are done and can brag about your new car.
