Map of Narnia

For this instructable, I decided to do a map of Narnia from the book Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It was one of my favorite in the Narnia series, and drawing the map was lots of fun, and brought back lots of nostalgia.

The first step in the process of drawing is to find a picture of the map that you want. You should resize the photo, so that it fits full screen to your computer, and you should turn the brightness up, so that you can see all the necessary details for the map.

The first step in the process is to draw an outline of all the landmasses. This is typically done in pencil in case any errors are made. Do not worry about the lines being perfectly straight; the less straight the shorelines are the more accurate it tends to look.

Many fantasy maps involve mountains, and a map of Narnia is no exception to this rule. For this, I get an idea of the locations the mountains should be in. The next step is to draw a series of triangles. They should be spaced somewhat close together, with some triangles touching, and some a little further apart. After that choose which side of the map your sun will be on. Shade all of your mountains on the same side. On the other half of the 'triangle; you should either leave blank or draw a few lines to give it a worn appearance.

After you finish drawing and shading in your mountains it is time to move onto the water and trees. Rivers can be drawn in two ways. The first being simple lines as they would appear on a normal map. The second is by drawing a set of curved parallel lines to give the appearance of a wide river. From there, we move onto the trees. From the books and the movies, it is known that Narnia has lots of pine trees in it. For this, I draw an elementary schooler tree. Which is basically stacked triangles with a rectangular trunk. I chose these trees, because they are simple to draw, and easily covered up with either marker or pencil. I draw those trees in any forested area that is near mountains. In any area that has trees that is far away from mountains I draw lollipop trees, trees that have a circular top, and a rectangular trunk, these will also be covered up with pencil or marker.

From there the next step is to label the map. Choose whichever type of font you want. I went with mixed fonts, as I thought it looked nicer, and it was easier to right in nicer fonts when the lettering was bigger. After that, I drew the currents, for this, I chose to draw some straight lines, as well as wobbly lines, and squiggles near the coasts of each island. Keep in mind that in certain areas of a map, currents may not appear as they would be deflected by landmasses.

Drawing on the extras can be one of the hardest parts, for this I chose to draw five different elements. The first element is the ship the dawn treader, since the map was done in such a small piece of paper, I chose not to put much detail into the boat itself. Giving it a vague dragon-like head, as well as a mast.

After that, I drew something that is essential to all maps, a compass to show how everything is oriented. This is done by drawing a simple cross. From there you draw four circles. The smallest one, and the second smallest one should be close together. The third and fourth circle should be drawn at the edge of the cross, and close to each other. After that draw four triangles on each of the main structures on the cross. They should be long stretching from the edge of the second circle out past the 4th circle. The triangles should than be divided down the middle. At the point of each triangle, a letter of direction should be written (N,S,E,W). Then at a 45-degree angle smaller and skinnier triangles should be drawn and divided in two. Those should not have any label on them.

Next, I drew a whales tail near the Great Eastern Ocean, it is drawn on top of a current to appear as the animal is diving downwards into the sea. I drew this by drawing an m shape, and then thickening it and giving it a base. After that, I put two sets of lines to give the tail a shiny appearance.

Next, I drew a sea dragon. It is mentioned in the books, and attacks the ship. I gave it a curled tail with a colored-in circle in the middle to appear as if the tail was curled. The middle of the dragon is done by making it a U-shape, this is because the creatures described in the books do not have legs or arms, and swim like a snake does. Next, I drew a vague head shape with a tongue flicking out of its mouth. The last thing drawn was a random fish-like creature poking out of the water.

This is one of the easier parts of the tutorial.

You should make a decision about which color you want your landmarks and landmasses to be. I chose to outline the landmasses, currents, and mountains in black. For that, I used an ultra-fine tipped sharpie.

Next, I outline the rivers in a light blue color. After that, I colored in the stumps of the trees in brown, and I colored in the trees in green. For the pine trees, I used green and colored them in to reflect the pine needles. For the lollipop trees, I used a lighter green, with some black squiggles to represent the leaves.

The last remaining thing to coloring in was the compass, I traced the compass in black, and for each direction, I colored half of the triangle black.

This last part is the easiest part.

The first step is to pick a color that you want your ocean to be, and to carefully color in the ocean on your map.

After that you can use either green or brown to color in the map. I chose brown to give it a more rustic appearance. I used 4 shades of brown. I colored areas near mountains a darker brown. Areas near the beach were a lighter brown or tannish color. Middle areas were a regular brown, and one island was colored a sand color.
