Merging Audio and Video Clips in Premiere Pro
When recording video with external microphones or boom, here's a how-to sync the higher quality audio with your imaging.
Import Your Files Into Premiere Pro
- Select File, in the drop down menu select Import
- Import your preferred media from your computer or external storage device. Once files are selected, push Import.
Select Clips You Would Like to Merge
- Your imported files will appear in the Bin folder. Highlight the audio clips and video that you would like to select, and right click on the group.
- A drop down menu will appear, choose the Merge Clips option towards the bottom of the menu.
**Note: in this example I am merging 3 audio files to 1 video file, and this is because I used 3 microphones to film an interview between two subjects. The 3 audio channels are from 2 lappelle microphones and a room mic set up above them. These same steps can be used to file one or 3+ audio files, so long as they were recorded at the same time.
Confirm the Merge Clip
- Once you click Merge Clips, a window will emerge asking you to rename the file. Select your new name.
- Next, you may set up the preferences on how to merge. I recommend the Audio merge for cases of speech heavy audio files (the other options of Timecode and In/ Out Points can also be used, though primarily if there is a large distinguishable point in the audio (ie a time clapper, opening mic check etc). I have had the most success with Audio option when using a variety of audio recordings.
- After choosing your settings, select OK.
View Your Newly Created Merged Clip
- In the same window where your original audio and video file were, there will be a new file that you've just named/ created. Click on the file to review and enjoy!
