Millennium Falcon Desk Lamp

A few months back i was browsing the internet for a new desk lamp and i came across a star wars millennium falcon desk lamp.. i made a tie fighter version of it a few weeks back and won first prize on instructables.. I actually gave the tie fighter desk lamp away to a friend on his birthday cause it was way too big to use myself..

So i thought it was time i made a the millennium falcon version of the desk lamp.. but i'll be using a ready made base and extending arm.. i opt to using a very similar version of the IKEA FORSA work lamp.. since its smaller than my tie fighter version

Difficulty level:

  1. 3D printing - Easy
  2. Assembly - Easy
  3. Wiring - Easy
  4. Painting - Easy

So lets begin..

Supplies

  1. 5V USB White LED strip - https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_oEk0hDa
  2. M3 12mm screw
  3. M3 brass insert
  4. terminal block
  5. aluminium tube
  6. lamp base and arm - IKEA FORSA similar alternative - https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mtJxTqA
  7. USB 5v wires with switch - https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_EyOWdyF

and of course a 3D printer.. i'm currently using a BambuLab A1.. you can get them here using my affiliate links if you're interested.. they currently having a sale this whole Jun 2024..

Tinkercad 3D Modelling

TINKERCAD Modelling - Millennium Falcon

So i modelled and made the millennium falcon using Tinkercad.. you can watch a speedrun of my modelling on youtube..

I actually made several types of 3d printing files based of my Millennium Falcon model i made in tinkercad..

you can download the files at my makerworld page.. you can download the 3mf file if you're using bambu studio or the STL if you're using other slicer

The millennium falcon main body comes in 2 parts.. the front and the back.. there are also 4 pegs to merge the 2 half of the ship body together.. and 2 clips on each side of the millennium falcon to lock the 2 half together.. i seperated the satelite dish and the gun turrents too for easy 3d printing..

The whole ship will be held by a aluminium tube about 60-70mm length depending on how far apart you want the ship to be from the extending arm.. you'll need to drill a hole in the tube so that you can secure the tube with a m3 screw..

I 3d printed everything using my bambulab A1 printer.. and painted them using airbrush painting.. its best to color prep the print before assembly..

I masked the cockpit windows and paint over them.. so when i remove the masking the light from the LED would shine through the cockpit..

I used a single LED strip and just add it inside of the cockpit.. i also added a channel for the LED wires to go to..

Wiring

First you'll need to gut the ikea lamp desk.. taking off the lamp and wires.. leaving only the base and the arm..

then i ran my 5v USB wires into the channel of the arm frame.. there should a at least 100mm of wire slack on the top of the arm..

Now we can prep the LED strip for the lamp itself.. I have made a channel for the LED strip to be added to the back of the ship and a wire channel to the center of the ship..

The LED cockpit light should have the same channel that goes to the center of the ship..

In the center of the ship i made a space large enough to fit a terminal block.. just wire the LED strip on the back and the cockpit in parallel using the terminal block..

Connect the 5v wire from the arm base with the correct positive and negative ends..and close the 2 halves together.. Make sure the LED wires are not caught when closing the 2 halves..

Clamp the tube rod to the arm and tighten the arm clamps..

There is also a screen for the back thrusters to defuse the light from the LED strip to have an even brightness..

Now all you have to do is test the LED strips on the back and the front cockpit

I think the millennium desk lamp is just the right size since i used an existing desk lamp (IKEA FORSA working lamp) as the base and arm..

The Millennium falcon was easy to print and assemble.. i really like my desk lamp now..
