Mini DIY Yarn Hats!
Hi. My name is Megan. I’ve been doing arts and crafts for as long as I can remember. And I absolutely love teaching others how to find the joy in creating fun projects that they are proud of!
Arts and crafts can be very satisfying and calming to do…But do you ever feel some arts and crafts are too hard to tackle? Too expensive? Or take too much patience? Well, what if there was a craft that was super easy and cheap for anyone to try??? In just a few simple steps, I am going to show you how to easily craft the cutest DIY yarn hats. These little hats can be used for many different decorating techniques that comes to mind! The Fall and Winter seasons are the most favorite seasons people love decorating for. So why not we add to all that fun and exciting décor with these cute yarn hats?!

Supplies
Items you will need:
- Paper Rolls (these can be paper towel rolls, or toilet paper rolls)
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Ruler
Step 1: Cut the Paper Roll
To start, grab a roll of paper towel, or toilet paper, along with a pair of scissors. Then cut the roll about a little more than a half an inch long to form a “ring” for the base of the mini hat.
Feel free to cut however long of a ring desired for the hat, but I recommend staying under an inch, because if the ring is too thick, it will not look as good. After cutting one piece, set the rest of the paper roll aside for making more later.
Step 2: Cut Strands of Yarn
Pick out some yarn and grab ahold of the scissors. Begin by cutting the yarn into small threads. Length should not matter too much, but it would be easier to work with if there were longer pieces (as they will be trimmed later).
First, try cutting 1 thread and testing it out. Use the ruler to help measure and cut a good length. I like to try to go about 11.5 inches. As far as how many threads to cut, it all depends in the end. With this one I cut about 30 pieces.
Step 3: Start the Knots
Next, grab one of the yarn pieces and the ring that was cut earlier. Fold the piece of yarn in half and push the “loop” side through the paper roll.
Now take the other end of the yarn and fold it over the paper roll, and into the loop. Pull it through to create a knot. Repeat this step for all the other threads of yarn. Keep going until the entire ring is covered. Cut more strands of yarn if needed.
Step 4: Push Threads Through
Once the entire ring is covered, push all the dangling pieces of yarn through the other side of the paper roll ring. Try not to tangle the threads together, so lightly tug and separate them. It’s kind of similar to combing through hair.
Step 5: Knot the Strands Together
After pushing all threads through to the other side of the paper roll ring, it is time to tie a knot around them all to “close” the hat. By doing so, go ahead and grab the scissors and yarn once more.
Cut a small strand just big enough to tighten around and secure the threads together. I would say a strand of about 4.5 inches is a decent size. Form a loop around the threads with the cut strand but leave enough room for the ends to poke out (as that is the “pom pom” on the hat). Tie a knot with the loop strand that was made, and then trim the piece down so it does not stick out too much.
Step 6: Trim & Look Over
Once the hat has been tied and sealed with the special loop and knot, check over the hat. If the “pom pom” is too tall, feel free to trim it down to a length preferred.
After giving the hat a thorough check, it is good to go!
