Molten Lava Chocolate Mug Cake
This chocolate mug cake was designed for those with an intense sweet tooth who may not have the time, supplies, or knowledge to bake a traditional chocolate cake. This recipe is appropriate for those of any baking skill level who are interested in learning how to cook or simply want an easy, quick, satisfying dessert. You can expect this recipe to be complete in under 15 minutes.

Wash Your Hands!
Gather the Following Ingredients
3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
3 tablespoons of milk
1 Egg
3 tablespoons of granulated sugar
4 tablespoons of flour
2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa
Pinch of salt
½ teaspoon of baking powder
2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon of water
A pinch of powdered sugar (or more as desired)
You can purchase these ingredients at any grocery store.
Gather the Following Supplies
1 large mug (at least 12 oz)
1 spoon
2 forks (one for whisking and one to check if the cake is cooked)
1 butter knife
1 tablespoon
1 ½ teaspoon
Oven mitt
Have access to a microwave
Melt the Butter
Cut 3 tablespoons of butter into 3 equal pieces with the knife, put it in the mug, and melt it in the microwave for 15 seconds or until completely melted
Add the Milk, Eggs, and Granulate Sugar
Combine 3 tablespoons of milk, 1 egg, and 3 tablespoons of sugar granulated sugar into the melted butter and whisk with a fork until the egg yolk is no longer lumpy and has been mixed in smoothly with the rest of the ingredients. If any eggshells fall into the batter, remove it with a fork.
Add the Flour, Salt, Baking Powder, Cocoa Powder
Add the following dry ingredients into the mug: 4 tablespoons of flour, a pinch of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder and 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa. Stir until all ingredients are completely mixed without any lumps.
Add the Chocolate Chips
Put 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips on a spoon and place them gently in the center of the batter so they stay together. Use the spoon to cover the chocolate chips with batter so they cannot be seen from the top of the mug. Do not mix the chocolate chips into the batter.
Add the Water
Add one tablespoon of water to the top of the batter. Do not mix it in. This will help keep your chocolate mug cake soft and moist!
Microwave Your Mug Cake!
Place the mug in the microwave and microwave for 1 minute and 20 seconds. Let the mug cake rest in the microwave for an additional 1 minute.
Is It Done?
To test if your mug cake has been cooked all the way through, remove the mug from the microwave using an oven mitt and insert the prongs of a fork near the edge of the cake (avoid the middle where the chocolate chips are). If the toothpick is clean (i.e. does not have remnants of cake batter on it), then the cake is fully cooked. If you need to microwave the mug cake for more time, cook it for an additional 20 seconds and then repeat the fork test. When completed, your cake should look dry on top.
Take It Out
Use the oven mitt to take the mug cake out of the microwave. Place on a heat resistant surface.
Garnish Your Mug Cake!
Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top of the mug cake. Add as much or a little as you wish!
