Mother-of-pearl Guitar Fret Board | Laser engraving and cutting | Trotec

This week we'll show you how to make an amazing synthetic mother-of-pearl inlay in a wooden guitar fret board using our Speedy 360 laser engraving machine.

Engraving the Wood

Start out by changing the settings on your Speedy 360. First set the power to 100 then set the speed to 100 for black, and 100 power, 40 speed for blue.

In the artwork files we've attached, the engraving will be blue and black filled. The black fill is for general background engraving and the blue fill is for the deeper engraving for inlaying the mother-of-pearl.

Cutting the Mother of Pearl

Use the same artwork from the previous step, it already has the red hairline (0.1mm) outline for the cut. For the cut, the settings for red will be 60 power and 2 speed.

Gluing

Use wood glue to get the mother-of-pearl to stick to the wood inside the inlays. Let it sit for a few hours and it will be set. You can cover the board with lacquer or varnish to give it that glossy shine.
