My Elven Knife
This is my Elven fighting knife that I forged out of flat stock. It is 18" long and has a lace wood handle. I spent a lot of time polishing the blade. I use it for clearing brush it work very well, it is light, sharp, and fast.
The Forging of the Blade
Well my first comment I got was how did I make it. So I will explain how I made this. I do not have very many pictures because this was one of my earlier projects.
But all of my knifes start with a blank peace of steel. As shown above, And are pounded by hand into there shape. This blade took the longest of all of my knifes because it is so long and thin.
After I have got the shape I want in the forge, I take it and grind the profile in wich is the final shape it will be. Then I heat it until it is cherry red and quench it, This blade was quenched in oil to protect it a little more and provide more hardness.
Then I take it out and sand it down and temper it, tempering draws a little of the hardness out so that the blade will be more flexible. So there will be no chance of it shattering on impact.
After the tempering, I hand sand the whole thing until it shined white. I worked on it on and off for about a week before I got it the way I wanted it. Then to finish it up I glued on two scales of lace wood that were laying around the shop and I was done.
That is how the forging of this blade took place. If I could redo it I would have left a thicker spine and added more of a bevel but it turned out pretty good.
